Early voting in Florida opened Monday morning to long lines at some polling places, sporadic thunderstorms and a glitch that downed Orange Countys elections office website for the day.
Donning masks and queuing up at a safe social distance because of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands flocked to early voting locations across Central Florida. In Miami and Fort Lauderdale, voters were in line before dawn, even in the rain.
Enthusiasm leading up to the Nov. 3 election is high in Florida, a crucial swing state to clinching the presidency. In all, more than 14.4 million people are registered to vote, compared to the 2016 general election when Florida had about 12.8 million voters.
As of Monday, more than 2.5 million mail-in ballots had already been returned to elections offices, nearly equalling the 2.7 million mail-in votes cast in 2016.
