'Friendship, empathy, kindness, and compassion': Biden leans into Mr. Rogers comparison

WASHINGTON – Democratic nominee Joe Biden is leaning into the Mr. Rogers comparison made by the Trump campaign.

The iconic children's TV host was trending Thursday night after Mercedes Schlapp, a senior adviser for President Donald Trump's reelection campaign, compared the former Vice President's town hall to Fred Roger's beloved show.

“Feels like I am watching an episode of Mister Rodgers Neighborhood,” she wrote in a now-viral tweet, which sparked dialogue online about Mr. Rogers' legacy. Schlapp was criticizing the different tones between the Biden and Trump town halls and insisted ABC moderator George Stephanopoulos went easier on Biden than NBC moderator Savannah Guthrie went on Trump.

"A few weeks ago, I spoke to Mr. Rogers’ wife Joanne when I was in her neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It was a great conversation," Biden posted on Twitter Tuesday, which included what appeared to be a screenshot of the call. "Friendship, empathy, kindness, and compassion — I think we could all learn a thing or two from her and her husband’s example."

The day he died, I cried. Ugly cried. I was a full-grown adult. A wonderful force for good had left the world. He was a kind, compassionate, decent man who did all he could to improve the lives of his viewers. Puzzling to use a comparison with Mr Rogers as some sort of diss.

We could definitely do worse in a president — and we did, by a mile.
