The Trump administration will this week join five other countries signing a declaration which seeks to prohibit abortion.
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo and joint health and human services secretary Alex Azar are scheduled to attend a virtual ceremonial singing of the Geneva Consensus on Thursday.
The Geneva Consensus is a coalition of states who oppose the United Nations's (UN) Declaration of Human Rights, which are enshrined in international law.
In particular, Geneva Consensus members disagree with the UN's stance on abortion.
The UN Human Rights Commission says that abortion is a human right, and many of the US's key Western allies - such as France and the UK - agree with that stance.
States other than the US who support the Geneva Consensus have strict laws on both abortion and same-sex or ban each entirely.

(25,899 posts)having one, I'd respect them more. And if they'd agitate for things like universal health care, free pre- and post-natal care for mother and baby, good day care for the children of working moms.
Oh, and I really, really wish they'd go after the men fathering these babies. I'm going to suggest that not a single one took place without a man involved.

The leaders of Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia and Uganda have each been accused by UN members of abusing human rights.

(36,917 posts)Republicans are in favor of killing living babies and have done so.
Pro-life is a myth.
The supposed pro-lifers cared naught when the state of Texas (republican gov, republican Prez) deliberately killed living baby Sun Hudson against the mother's wishes because he was an inconvenience to the state.
It is not a matter of life to the supposed pro-lifers.
It is a matter of control.
unpleasant truth
(1 post)I don't think it helps the Democrats' cause (or humanity, for that matter) to share things that are false or misleading. The UN Declaration of Human Rights do not mention abortion in any way - see https://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/index.html. The closest any of the articles in the UN DHR get to in relation to abortion is:
Article 3.
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
and:
Article 25.
2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.
But that seems to go against, rather than for, any claimed right for abortion.
The UN HRC does not actually get to make its own international law, afaik, that would have to be a UN-wide agreement.

(82,849 posts)It's not the UN Declaration of Human Rights, it's the UN Human Rights Committee. Here is their statement on abortion from October 30, 2018:
