After coming 1,058 votes short against Davis in 2018, Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan is running again and both parties view the rematch as a barnburner. Londrigan continues to outspend the incumbent, and Davis's new appeal to Biden voters to split their tickets is an acknowledgment that Trump's fortunes have taken a turn for the worse after the president carried the district by five points in 2016.
Over the summer, Londrigan's path looked more complicated as COVID-19 cast doubt on turnout at the major universities in the 13th CD, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (enrollment 49,000). It's still not clear turnout there will be at typical strength, but Davis, who tested positive for COVID-19 over the summer and warned his own party "don't be stupid," may be struggling to overcome Trump's drag.

(11,646 posts)She was so close last time and I think this is her year. This is a heavily gerrymandered district that stretches like a snake half the length of the state diagonally across Illinois. I am 3 hours from Champaign but we share this congressional district because republicans wanted to include as many rural voters as they could across central Illinois to counterweight Champaign, Sangamon, and Madison counties which are far apart.
Rodney Davis' central message as he repeatedly votes against ACA has been... "How could I be against pre-existing conditions when my wife has one?"
