...no matter how big a Blue Wave we get.
I think the only thing that could save us from another Trump-like mess in the future (if we survive Trump this time) would be Constitutional amendments that would more strongly protect Congressional oversight, provide independence of the Justice Department, protect and standardize voting rights in all states, nix the Electoral College, and limit the ability of the government officials to "play out the clock" with lengthy court battles when faced with subpoenas and court orders (just to get started).
But 3/4 of states, that's 38 of them, are required to amend the Constitution. It's generally a good idea that it's so hard to pass amendments, but Trump has shown we have some serious vulnerabilities in our system that are probably out of reach of mere ordinary federal law to fix.
Actually, even if Democrats had control of 38 states, I'm still not sure we'd be able to dump the Electoral College, because (unfortunately) I'd bet that even small-state Democrats might fight to keep their out-sized representation.

(38,958 posts)The GOP may be suffering from a crushing defeat in the next couple of weeks. We will not get enough State Houses to achieve any real change, but anything bad for republicans, is a good thing.

(15,270 posts)...if we tried to pass such amendments while Biden was President, and short-term thinking rules the day for Republicans, Republicans might happily put Biden under tighter oversight in the short term, and not worry about leaving room for a future Republican President to abuse the system later.
They'd never go for uniform national voting rights and protections, however. Republican will be eager to get back to voter suppression as soon as they can.

(9,500 posts)Its hard to win a legislative majority when you realistically need to win 60%+ of the votes, like in WI.
PA, MI, OH, and TX are in a similar situation.
