TX-24: Mask wearing has been politicized, and now is a defining issue.
In Candace Valenzuelas latest television commercial, three voters look straight into the camera and cover their noses and mouths with masks.
Then, as images of Beth Van Duyne Valenzuelas Republican opponent and President Donald Trump flash across the screen, a narrator says they downplayed the pandemic.
Trumps handling of the coronavirus pandemic has become the dominant political storyline of the 2020 election. Democrats, from former Vice President Joe Biden down the ticket, are running on a promise to curb the pandemic that has killed more than 223,000 Americans and infected another 8 million.
While the pandemic is a factor in nearly every political race this fall, it has become a pitched and personal clash in the multimillion dollar race between Valenzuela and Van Duyne to represent Texas' 24th Congressional District.
Once a Republican stronghold that includes parts of Dallas, Tarant and Denton counties, the suburban district has become more competitive in the region this year. Democrats see the open seat as a key pickup to expand their support in the suburbs. Republicans see it as a must-win if the party has any chance of regaining control of the U.S. House in the near future.
