Curious if there are any DUers who were not involved with politics before Trump?

Was Trump so absurd and insane you felt like you had to finally engage?

If you were not involved much, did you also not used to vote? Will this be your first election to vote in or perhaps second?

Any Republicans here who Trump caused you to switch parties?

This can be attributed to my desire to get the Klansman out of the Whitehouse. I have never written letters or texted voters before this election. I still can't bring myself to phonebank. Maybe someday I will.

And active off and on for decades. I was raised with politics, in our house it was a thing... but my dad was military and the cold war was raging so that had something to do with it.

Berkeley, Calif. days. Also supported Bobby Seale for mayor of Oakland back then (he lost in a close race in a run-off).

Have always voted straight Democratic since then.

Got really active as an Obama precinct captain in '08, along with canvassing, voter registration and phone banking—in 2012, 2016, 2018 as well. Did zoom phone banking this time and online contributions because of covid.

We're going to win.

I paid attention to politics but not as much as I do now. I paid attention to policies but not the game of politics. I'll admit that I did not pay attention to court nominations (both the SCOTUS and lower courts). I had no idea that people were using courts to play politics to advance their political agenda and dismantle the progressive political agenda.

What made me pay attention to the game was:

1) Me trying to understand the game, basically, trying to figure out what happened to these big bold policy ideas and why didn't they pass; me trying to understand how we ended up with the Obamacare that we ultimately got; and so on.

2) Blocking of Merrick Garland

3) Trump was absurd and I felt I needed to prepared for all the fuckery we were gonna have to deal with

The first time I could ever vote in a presidential election was 2012 as it was the first election I was old enough to vote in. I voted at the urging of my mother. I wasn't gonna vote. I didn't care for voting but my mother didn't care about my feelings. lol

I've always considered myself an independent because there are conservative ideas that I liked. (For example, I can get behind tax cuts. I think tax cuts can be used in a progressive and populist way. However, I don't think they should be given just for being in business and breathing, as they were in 2017). As I got to understand the game of politics I learned that some ideas that Republicans proposed I could get behind was pure bullshit coming from them. I've considered a "gettable voter" in the past if they could convince me, which is a tall mountain to climb. However, after they blocked Merrick Garland, which I thought the most fucked up thing I'd ever seen, and then nominated self-promoting narcissistic opportunist like Trump, that is a party that I will never join.

To add: I joined DU because I needed people to talk about Trump's fuckery with. I had no one to discuss with that paid attention to politics at all.

I lost my job and had more time to pay attention. Obama got me excited about what could happen. I have always voted since I turned 18 always Democratic except the year I voted for Perot.
