US House candidate, NY-14
I could say yes, but who cares? Plenty of people without college degrees could run this country better than Trump ever has.
As much as GOP cry about elites, theyre the ones who constantly mock food service workers, people w/o degrees, etc as dumb. Its classist & disgusting.

(46,215 posts)Ocasio-Cortez attended Yorktown High School, graduating in 2007. * * * * She came in second in the microbiology category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a research project on the effect of antioxidants on the lifespan of the nematode C. elegans. In a show of appreciation for her efforts, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory named a small asteroid after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez.
In high school, she took part in the National Hispanic Institute's Lorenzo de Zavala (LDZ) Youth Legislative Session. She later became the LDZ Secretary of State while she attended Boston University. Ocasio-Cortez had a John F. Lopez Fellowship.
After graduating from high school, Ocasio-Cortez enrolled at Boston University. Her father died of lung cancer in 2008 during her second year, and Ocasio-Cortez became involved in a lengthy probate battle to settle his estate. She has said that the experience helped her learn "first-hand how attorneys appointed by the court to administer an estate can enrich themselves at the expense of the families struggling to make sense of the bureaucracy." During college, Ocasio-Cortez served as an intern for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, in his section on foreign affairs and immigration issues. She recalled, "I was the only Spanish speaker, and as a result, as basically a kida 19-, 20-year-old kidwhenever a frantic call would come into the office because someone is looking for their husband because they have been snatched off the street by ICE, I was the one that had to pick up that phone. I was the one that had to help that person navigate that system." Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in both international relations and economics.

(1,648 posts)But to be fair, I am sure that we all can agree that Donnie Dumbass had to cheat the entire way through college life for any alleged degree with his name on it... If it was not just printed on his computer or by his father's connections with a printer to show his so called credentials. Of course Donnie Dumbass will gladly give you 'his copy' of his academic summary, instead of a copy of his real academic record.

(11,744 posts)When liberal and people on the left talk about "the elites" we typically mean people who have large sums of money and political power and who use that money and power to shape public policy (I.E. The Koch Brothers who have spent millions of dollars setting up right wing think tanks in Universities and who have funded so-called grass roots efforts to push a right wing agenda).
When conservative people talk about "the elites" they are talking about smart people basically. People who studied at University, who have a level of expertise and authority in a field and who use that expertise to inform public policy.
That is the difference in the use of the word "elite".
iluvtennis
(19,880 posts)as elites. Now, I know, they re-spun the word for their purposes - just like they do everything else.
Caliman73
(11,744 posts)There is a tiny grain of truth in what they say about "elites" regarding Government officials too. People further to the left than Democrats will also include Senators and members of Congress in the term elite because at this point, 95% or more of our elected National government reps are millionaires or more AND we know that our "elites" (the Liberal definition) give them money, or sweet deals, or employment after they leave office, etc... in order to gain access to legislation. So people like McConnell, Nunes, Pelosi, and Schumer are also called "elites" by the left.
The truly weird thing is that people like Ted Cruz will rail against "the elites" in Washington, meaning Pelosi, when that asshole would also be considered "elite" by his very definition, and that piece of crap takes money directly from the big fossil fuel companies and other billionaires.
The thing we need to remember is that Liberals tend to think about words as communicating meaning and information. When we talk about apples, we mean those red, green, and other colored fruits that grow in trees and have varying levels of sweet/tart flavor that we eat. Republicans use words to trigger emotion. They say things like "liberty" which is abstract as all hell, but they say it to trigger feelings of animosity toward rules that they dislike. "Being told to wear a mask to stop the spread of a deadly contagious disease, is an affront to your liberty." A woman being told she cannot make decisions about her own body is not a challenge to "liberty" at all I guess, that is "pro-life" even though that same child will be denied healthcare, food, or any other protection once it is born, leading to a bad life and likely early death.
Bottom line. Republicans are liars. They use words to manipulate not to inform.

(4,473 posts)For those who don't know the term. the Gentleman's C is one of the less admirable traditions of the Ivy League. It is a passing grade in a course given to a student of "good family" (that is almost certainly how George W Bush got through Yale) or whose family has donated a large chunk of money to the school (which I'll bet is how Trump got through Penn) who doesn't deserve a passing grade.
I came across it when I was a graduate student at Harvard. I taught a class, and flunked a scion of a Boston Brahmin family. The department head called me in, and told me to change the grade to a C because of the student's family. I said that he had deserved an F, so I gave him one. The department head then changed the grade himself.
I then got a job at the university computer center, because I didn't want to be part of that sort of dishonesty. Oddly enough, it paid considerably better than being a teaching assistant.
