Meet Adam Quinn Atwood, a 34-year-old man living in Salt Lake City.
Police arrested Atwood on March 25 and charged him with seven first-degree felony charges of rape, object rape, aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, four counts of second-degree felony forcible sexual assault, and aggravated assault after he attacked a friend of the woman to whom he is married in their home.
The motive? The woman identifies as a lesbian. Now, a judge has released Atwood from jail without bail.

Atwood has remained in jail since his arrest. A judge initially set his bail at $750,000, though that amount was lowered to $150,000 the following month. Judge Kristine Johnson ordered Atwoods release on October 19 and waiving his bail. The details of Atwoods court agreementincluding the reason his bail was waivedhave not been made public.

This guy is not safe to be let out, that judge should be disbarred.

(25,473 posts)I can't imagine a situation where the no-bail release was justified. Other articles indicated that it was requested that several conditions be met even for bail (GPS-monitor, no contact with anyone under 18, no internet, etc.) but no details were released regarding those conditions or if they were even put in place.

By Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed a shareholder at Parsons Behle & Latimer as a judge for the 3rd District Court.
Kristine Johnson, who has served on the firms board of directors since 2015, has practiced civil litigation there since 1997. She also practiced at Campbell Maack & Sessions from 1995 to 1997. She holds a Juris Doctor from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, and a bachelors degree in history and political science from Trinity University.
Kristine Johnson has a wealth of experience that will serve her well as she transitions into this new role, Herbert said in a statement. I have no doubt she will work hard and that her passion and dedication in enforcing the law will make her a great addition to the courts.

(90,780 posts)Women get abused for reporting rape. In addition to the rape by the attacker, the system imposes its own form of assault through bigotry and bias. Outright hate - racism, sexism, hate against LGBTQA people.
The usual bigotry/sexism and stereotypes - What time was it? What was she wearing? How was she behaving? She was asking for it, etc..
Women of color are judged even harsher.
Assumptions of being a prostitute, being on welfare and all that implies, etc., in addition to the usual cruelty female rape victims are subjected to by the police.
Lesbians are judged harsher as well. Along with the usual barrage of prejudicial judgments comes the - Teach her a lesson. Turn her straight. All she needs is a man.
Transgender people get it even worse as victims. They are not seen as who they are - male, female, non-binary, fluid across the spectrum people deserving respect. They are seen as freaks.
Can't make up their minds. Not a real - man/woman. Deserved it. Teach her/him a lesson. The abuse they get is always based in binary attitudes about gender and sexuality - inherent in such thinking is an across the board dismissal of them as people. As human.
Person of color and LGBTQA? Far worse still.
Classism also plays a role in this hierarchy of hate. As does some religions.
Why the long answer to express my anger?
Because it was needed. My anger isn't simply that a woman was raped and the rapist is now loose. It was anger at that hierarchy of hate.
At the attitudes - the hate based thinking - that allows assholes to think less of women and even worse of women who don't conform to their ideal of what a woman is and isn't.
Apply that across the board to all the intersections of parts of an identity that make up the complete identity of who a person is.
It's that thinking that helps assholes in law/justice/society to let rapists (and other abusers) go free and unchecked.

(36,132 posts)Lots of rapists running around.
Rape stats don't seem up to date for a reason, probably the same reason over 200,000 rape kits sit untested. Every 73 seconds there's sexual assault in the US. I'd say that's a lot of adult supervision these rapists need.
Lots of Republican appointed justices are needed, too, to damp down the seriousness of the more violent club members getting away with rape, which is why there's actually a rape culture.

Rape culture has its various presentations across all classes of all nations. Which is why there is are domestic courts in every county here, and international orgs like the UN that deal with it as a war crime.
