Debt debate

Can someone point me toward a good main-stream article about where the debt actually came from, vis a vis Bush keeping the wars off the books and then Obama put it back in, artificially making it look like Obama has added more to the debt than he has? (this is my understanding, if I'm wrong, please correct).
