STEVE KORNACKI DESERVES THIS WAVE OF INTERNET LOVE

Late on Thursday night, Steve Kornacki decided to go home and get some sleep. Kornacki, MSNBC’s national political correspondent and in-house map expert, had been on the air almost constantly since Tuesday night, standing in front of the touch screen map with verve, drawing numerals with his finger while he waited for the system to update. But at 11:48 p.m., he changed his mind, and announced it on Twitter:

So when a tranche of votes from Philadelphia came through at around 9 a.m. on Friday morning, putting Joe Biden into the lead, it was 41-year-old Kornacki who announced it to the viewing public, and he did it in his classic way, fueled by Diet Coke, his hair slightly mussed, still wearing those Gap khakis in palomino brown.

Kornacki’s contribution to the election has been consistently edifying and fascinating, and this time around he even got his own hashtag complete with a Twitter emoji. When any stressful mass media event happens, the internet starts to get a little horny in addition to all that anxiety—just think of the pandemic affection for Andrew Cuomo, and how long he milked that attention. So is it any surprise, when Election Day turned into a three-night celebration of sadomasochism, that a few enterprising Twitter users started to call Kornacki “Map Daddy”? (In some ways, this is a uniquely New York phenomenon, I’ll admit it. When Andy Byford was brought in from Toronto to lead the MTA, public transit nerds started to call him “Train Daddy.” By the time he publicly clashed with Cuomo, there were stickers.)

I can't watch him - too frenetic for my taste - but I know he's very good at what he does.

just how tough that job is. All off the cuff in the wee hours when the brain and body are tired. His math is sound but his geography accumine is what impresses me most.
