The mystery with Christie is why he's playing against the game of lowering expectations.

The answer to that mystery is the same as the answer to your query. Christie expects Romney to lose and he wants to be the moderate the GOP turns to to regain the White House in 2016.

I think it's more of a kick-off to his OWN presidential campaign.

Christie's problem is he resembles Taft, at least in dimensions, but his politics are the polar opposite of Taft's.
