General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'm a Rachel Maddow fan, but I think there are way too many ads on her show.
Honestly!
And most of them are MSNBC ads.
It's super tedious! I only get one break a night and I have used it to tune in to Rachel, but not really wanting to any more.
Why do they shove so many ads at us, if it isn't even paid time?
The tin foiler on my left shoulder says it's corporate tamping down her viewership. The pragmatist on my right shoulder says, bullshit, they want ad revenue, that would make no sense.

(31,706 posts)Running a news network is a high maintenance operation. Besides paying Rachel there are producers and researchers and writers and techies...a lot of people behind the scenes who make the show go. I'm glad that GE and now Comcast have let Rachel, Ed, Lawrence and others at that network do their thing...and it appears to be paying dividends. The ratings are up and with it the commercial time gets more precious.
The network has the same amount of content time as its comeptitors and Rachel's show is formatted identical to the other evening programs (it has to so it can be rerun later). I don't mind the promos...that's what a viable and succesful network does to present an image and expand an audience. It sure beats seeing another insipid Free Credit Score commercial or singing local car dealer...

(31,706 posts)The format of Rachel's show is the same as with Ed and Lawrence. I DVR the show and blow through the commercials...but I notice a similar format on all the shows. What can seem overbearing is the network's habit of running 3 minutes of comericals then a one minute "teaser" followed by another 3 minutes. I do notice that Rachel's opening is longer these days...they won't get to that first break until at least 15 minutes after the hour...that backs up against the other breaks so the other segments are shorter and seems like the commercial breaks are longer.

(1,484 posts)I don't subscribe to broadcast TeeVee, but I watch The Rachel Maddow Show every day, without fail. I do it when it is convenient for me, and I do it with the ability to control all of the offensive advertising. And it is also completely free to me for all of the control that I enjoy in watching her show. The way I do it is by watching her show on the Internet. Usually, her show comes to the Internet about one hour after it has been broadcast on the TeeVee air waves, and you can count on each show being available for you to watch for about one week after the date that it first airs.
Her Internet shows also run repetitive, obnoxious and insulting advertisements after almost every news segment, but I usually just turn the volume down on my speakers and then do whatever other business I have to do. Usually I have to pee because of the effect of the diuretic medicine that I must take due to a condition of my heart. So I would say that the advertisements that are run on her show last for about as long as it takes for me to pee (which may in itself be symbolic). It is also possible for me to pause the Internet broadcast in cases where I may need to answer the telephone, or read an important email that just came in. I can also go back and listen to any show segment over again so as to make absolutely sure that I am on the same page as she.
The computer monitor screen I have is a huge Apple Cinema (which has been adapted to run on PC) and it has a screen resolution that is better than most TeeVee screens, so I am confident that the images that I watch are at least as good as the TeeVee broadcast medium.
I am offended by almost all advertising that I encounter in my life. I don't know you, but I would imagine that the level of aggravation that I experience by being subjected to advertising must at least be on a level with yours, and this is how I have solved the insult of being subjected to it.

(1,484 posts)During the 60's I used to surf a place in Newport Beach, Southern California, that is called The Wedge. When it is "breaking" (usually about three times every summer), it continually has the largest break that has ever been recorded in the continental USA.
But that was before they closed it off, wrote a law and began arresting people for going out in the water there. There has never been to my knowledge any person who has tried to board surf there, and who has lived to tell it (even short boarders). There are many reasons why, but it is one spot that is really only for body surfers and belly boarders.

(22,143 posts)To sell ads. That's the point of television itself. And the unpaid ads remind you to continue watching your favorite ad sellers.

(42,714 posts)The paid ads garner the station revenue. The promo spots for other MSNBC shows are ads designed to get the audience to watch those shows, so that more (and higher priced) ads can be sold on those shows.
The idea that its "corporate tamping down on her viewership" is what makes no sense. MSNBC, and its corporate owners, are in business for the purpose making money not losing money. If they wanted to "tamp" down viewership they'd simply cancel the show or change the network's format.
