along with the stock market, and the Jan2009 prices reflected that distressed state of the economy.

That gas station sign sure left out WHY gas prices were so low the day Bush left office.

...is that it points out how idiotic the people that blamed Bush for those oil prices were and how politics has become a childish game of "no, you are bad - no YOU are worse - nuh, uh, - no backs".

The POTUS doesn't have control over oil prices and they've all been at the mercy of OPEC for decades.

Anybody who thinks the current oil prices are because we're not drilling has no clue what's going on in the shale boom areas.

was only the price of gas in places like Texas.

the Vast majority of the nation never got below $1.95.

The price in JUNE 2008 was $4.27!!!

Also that period of low prices stopped and prices began to rise again BEFORE Obama took office but AFTER he was elected.

This shows manipulation more than any action of the Obama Admin.

Tue Oct 2, 2012, 08:01 PM

and not just here, but we had started a domino-fall that was circling the globe. global economic output declined dramatically in response to the implosion that happened here. people were being laid off by the hundreds of thousands. it was quite literally epic in scope.

as all of this was occurring, the price of petroleum products tumbled... hell, they fell off a cliff. and it was't just gasoline... it was all petro products. from crude oil to the plastics to the gasoline... rapidly declining demand and forecasts of further declines scared the willies out of the people with the contracts and they were dumping them as fast as they could.

the other item that exacerbated the decline in the price per dollar was that the dollar was also declining at the time. that was a nice little catalyst to the numbers being so dramatic on the downside. ON EDIT : i got this bit backward... the only thing from making it look WORSE was the decline in the value of the dollar.

it was a side-effect of the disaster rippling through our economy.

They appear to conveniently forget that in the summer leading up to the market crash, gas was well over $4 a gallon. And that happened under President......let's check this again.....oh, yeah, President Bush. Because of the crash, gas plummeted due to the machinations of oil speculators.

The only thing this graphic proves is how beholden the general public is to the oil speculators in the market. It has nothing to do with "Drill, Baby, Drill." It's not even the oil companies at work, it's the guys on Wall Street gambling on the price of gas. And we get screwed in the end.

Fox “News” Explains How The President Doesn’t Control Gas Prices

Media Matters put together this great montage of Fox “News”[sic] anchors explaining how the President doesn’t have the power to lower gas prices, and that the way to insulate ourselves from gas price spikes is to reduce our use of oil.

The clips, of course, are from 2008.

The weekend before I started, there was a rush on the gas stations. People were sitting in long lines to pay $5.00/gallon for gas. Gas stations were rationing gas - limiting purchases to 3-5 gallons. My husband and I sat in line for 2.5 hours in order to get enough gas for me to make it to my first day of work

I know the gas prices never went below $2.50/gallon after that. I have a long commute, and monitoring gas prices is part of my daily life.

On edit: just saw JHB's post and I was wrong There was a dip in gas prices. (right after Obama got elected?)
