(86,647 posts)Every grocery chain in the west has a cold warehouse and there used to be Termicold storage warehouses too. They have what they need in that capacity, and you wouldn't want to haul a bunch of trailers full of dead people up to the mountains.

(8,053 posts)That was my exact first thought! At this point, if Republican Governors are aggressive and start insisting on mask mandates (and fining people for non-compliance like other countries have done) that could help to get this out of the political arena where it never would've been if not for dt (BTW-I'm wondering if he can be charged with manslaughter, negligent homicide, etc. for all the lives lost).
This would definitely help with President-Elect Biden's plan to get this under control.

(16,402 posts)Just so he wouldn't have to wear a mask. Seriously. He was convinced that COVID was "hyped" and warnings/restrictions were "bullshit overkill," so he was refusing to wear a mask. Because he got negative flack for that where he was living, he moved to rural southern Utah and got sucked into the QAnon cult. He grew more and more delusional and strident about "his liberty" and "illegal" government restrictions.
Now well settled in Utah, he's finding out there will be mandatory mask wearing, no gatherings in private homes, and some other constraints. I hope he doesn't get the virus, but I have to admit that I am laughing right now.

Theyre not brothers and sisters. Theyre just people. If they need help because they deliberately chose not to use common sense theyll get it. Even though theyve proved they wouldnt be so kind to us.

(11,087 posts)They got the state supreme court to agree in October. Since then, the disease is spreading out of control. Back in June, we had a day with only 74 new cases. A couple of weeks later we had a day with 0 deaths (ZERO). It looked like we had it beat.
Now? We had a day with 6,700 new cases in November. That is freakin' Florida numbers. The most we had in the Spring was 1,900.
Out of control, and the governor can't do anything about it. And the state legislature won't.

(29,149 posts)It's nice that the governor is taking this action. I wonder what he was saying about it in the run-up to the election. We know that the trump administration was pretending the pandemic was over, and of course that contributed to its essentially unchecked spread in the last month or so.
Check out all the states in red, indicating serious problems with the virus getting out of control: https://covidactnow.org/?s=1301312
Seven states have more new cases per day per person than Utah. North Dakota has been over 100 new cases per day per 100k residents for at least a week or more, but they've rocketed up to 174.1/100k, which is the highest rate I've ever seen for a state.
South Dakota has been over 100/100k for over a week, with their ICU capacity already at 100%.
The picture right now seems pretty damn dire.

(10,909 posts)in daily new cases per capita, 7 day moving average. For many weeks, until about 2 weeks ago, MN ranked between #18 and #20, while our U.S. neighbors ranked #1, #2, #3 or 4, and Iowa somewhere between #5 and #8. (The 4 neighbors are NoDak, SoDak, Wisconsin, and Iowa).
So we (Minnesota) thought we were doing something right maybe. But nope, we're going straight up (bad) in all the metrics and rankings.
Utah (#8) is just one ranking worst than Minnesota (#9).
Thanks for the great link

(14,120 posts)BREAKING: Gov. Herbert declares new state of emergency, statewide mask mandate, other restrictions
By Lindsey Peterson Nielson
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) Governor Gary Herbert addressed the state of Utah Sunday evening during an emergency message that was announced through an alert system statewide. Following weeks of continued stress on Utahs hospital networks due to a rise in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Herbert declared a State of Emergency to address hospital overcrowding.
Breaking point: Record number of COVID-19 patients overwhelms Utah hospitals
The governor and Utah Department of Health have also issued concurrent executive and public health orders designed to curb the surge of cases in Utah. Both orders go into effect Monday, Nov. 9, and will remain in effect until Nov. 23.[
