After reading a few posts here today about very disturbing long term effects following a covid infection:

I got to wondering, how are the vaccine candidates being made? - do they use the virus? etc.

1. Please realize there are different methods for the different vaccines. This Pfizer vaccine is a

messenger RNA vaccine. Others are using a protein antigen from the virus "wrapped" in what is basically a cold virus (adenovirus). Lots of techniques and significant differences, even within similar overall techniques (e.g. choice of stimulating "antigen" )

But no. None of them are modified live virus because of the high chance of reversion (mutation) of the vaccine virus back to an infectious form
