Not to boost Reagan, but in 1980 it was a three-way race with a viable 3rd party candidate.... George II Dec 2020 #2

has won 51.3% of the popular vote. I looked it up and that's a bigger percentage than Reagan got in 1980. I remember that election well, and it was considered a resounding victory over Carter at the time. Of course, Biden's share is also much larger than Clinton's in 1992. To beat an incumbent President by the amount that Biden has beat Trump is quite a win, and I think it's a total repudiation of the whole Trump movement.

....John Anderson, who got 6.7%. Reagan beat Carter by 9.3%. But his 51.3% was equal to Biden's this year. But it was a relatively large win over an incumbent.

Until 2016 when trump "won" that was the most depressing election for me.

Same thing for 1992. That year Ross Perot ran as a 3rd party candidate and got 18.9%. Clinton got only 43% to Bush's 37.4%, but won 370 electoral votes - truly an electoral college bloodbath. That was the HAPPIEST election for me up until 2008 when Obama won.

This year's election, however, may be the most satisfying - it may just have saved the country.

Sorry to throw cold water on your enthusiasm!

I had forgotten all about Andersen in that election. I don't know who he took more votes from in that election, Carter or Reagan. Reagan would still have won, nevertheless. I think Perot took more votes from Bush on 1992. All the people I knew who voted for Perot were pretty conservative; they didn't like Bush because of Desert Storm. I doubt they would ever have voted for Clinton, though. I'm still pretty impressed with Joe. I thought he would win, but I thought it would be a squeaker. He and Kamala really came through for us, and we needed a solid win against the Hellbeast.

...nobody knows much about whose votes he took. But inasmuch as Reagan won by more than 9%, his presence didn't change the result.
