I am baffled. I thought a filibuster plan was the best route to get a vote. Bernie and a few more Patriots could have just gone on and on.

(22,913 posts)if McConnell did not allow a vote on the two thousand dollar relief checks first. Originally the Senate planned to be out of town before New Year's Eve. Senators like their time off, and the Republican Senators from Georgia wanted to be home to campaign. Democrats in the Senate were never going to allow Congress to adjourn without over riding Trump's veto of the Defense Bill, but they were willing to work with Bernie to keep the Senate in session into the weekend. No single Senator, not even a handful of them, can prevent a bill from ultimately being voted on unless there are 41 votes to block cloture. However Bernie could and did gum up the works exactly as planned, which kept public attention focused on the Republicans blocking Americans getting those $2,000 checks well into this extended holiday weekend.

(21,168 posts)When he disgusts that guy I bet others like him are angry.
$2000 is nothing to discount lightly. Most people, whether right-wing or not, could really use that money.

(46,745 posts)I have a right-wing ex-friend who just had a mishap that will cost her $4000 in property damage. I bet she's really wishing there weren't so many Republicans in the Senate, right about now.

(10,155 posts)a permanent Republican majority. Bernie just isn't popular outside the bluest of blue enclaves. It's why Donald trump desperately wanted to run against Bernie rather than Biden.

(171 posts)...the Bernie and to a lesser extent AOC worship has reached trump cult level delusion in some online bubbles. When you peel back the useless grandstanding and Twitter clap backs, they are both just bad and polarizing politicians with very limited appeal..

(146,318 posts)The Senate is still in session. So, Bernie succeeded in the sense that he kept the Senate in Washington for today and tomorrow. The new Congress begins on January 3. Nothing being considered now will carry over.
Sanders didn't "cave." He got what he wanted.

(26,083 posts)You are way off base with your OP. Sanders did exactly what he said he would do and succeeded at what needed to be done.

(62,276 posts)Fuck me, I wasted 4 days glued to this hoping he would offer a motion to proceed in consideration as has been done 28 times against the consent of the majority leader.

Bernie's goals were to delay, resist, promote the $2000 check with the public, and irritate Mitch. All accomplished.
And by delaying one introduces the possibility (ever so small with this bill) of a different outcome.
This was a good example of how someone like Bernie can work with Democrats in orchestrated moves.
