"SNIP.....
It took four years and an election defeat. But someone with real power inside the Republican Party is standing up to and swatting back President Trump: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Axios reports.
This is a preview of the power struggle that will define the Republican Party in 2021.
Said a Republican operative familiar with the leaders thinking: McConnell is trying to reclaim the role he had in 2009 leader of the opposition to a new Democratic president.

(5,444 posts)and that Trump is an attention whore who will be Simple Simon to his GOP minions. Trump will not fade into the background, but declare himself the "real" President. Could split the GOP, but Mitch is too smart for that.

(118,718 posts)they can control (reagan, bush, bush) layed the table for Trump. And now their party may break in two.

(19,962 posts)If it's not done, there'll be no way back. The big thing in their favour is that the dumbasses who vote Republican, only get their low information from RW sources, so if it's done with subtlety, it might just work.

And, the power of the presidency forces attention.
The most radical will still long for their "king", but months after he's just a guy with no real power to do anything, he'll be an ex-POTUS (emphasis on the " ex" and his influence will wane.
I understand why you think that way, but he was not taken all that seriously by his own party until November 2016.
His influence came strictly from the surprise win. Once he was president, they had to listen to him.
Didn't listen to him before he got elected, will begin to ignore him after.
Look what just happened. PINO vetoes defense bill. McConnel oversees an overwhelming override.
PINO want stimulus raised to 2 grand. McConnell says no.
They already are starting to not care what he wants.
And, the bulk of his base has short attention spans. He knew that, it's one motivation behind Tue daily tweeting. Don't let them forget you, even for a day.
The power that he's about to relinquish was a major factor in people continuing to back his whims & wishes.
If anything, Rs are good at getting around political barriers. PINO will just be a speed bump at some point.

It's only redeeming quality will be No money. Because, Trump's ego will absorb every cent of cash or asset.
That's what happens when you marry a high maintenance man-baby.
