The die is cast for the Republican Party. It will be destroyed on January 6th in much the same way the Whig party was destroyed by the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. The act unraveled the Missouri compromise and allowed for the westward expansion of slavery. 1/

The party could not survive its factionalism. There could be no more accommodation, compromise and partnership between pro-slavery and anti-slavery Whigs. A new political party was born, the Republican Party. That party will divide into irreconcilable factions on January 6th. 2/

The 6th will commence a political civil war inside the GOP. The autocratic side will roll over the pro-democracy remnant of the GOP like the Wehrmacht did the Belgian Army in 1940. The ‘22 GOP primary season will be a blood letting. The 6th will be a loyalty test. The purge 3/

will follow. Does anybody doubt the outcome of the @IvankaTrump vs. @marcorubio primary in Florida? Anyone willing to make a bet on @robportman? It turns out JFK was right. The problem of trying to ride the tiger is the likelihood of winding up inside the tiger. The poisonous 4/

Fruit from four years of collaboration and complicity with Trumps insanity, illiberalism and incompetence are ready for harvest. It will kill the GOP because it’s Pro Democracy faction and Autocratic factions can no more exist together then could the Whig Party hold together 5/

The abolitionist with the Slave master. It won’t happen over night but the destination is clear. The Conservative party in America is dead. It may continue to bear the name “Republican” but it will be no such thing. Fascism has indeed come to America and as was once predicted 6

It is wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. This movement must be defeated. It cannot be appeased, accommodated or negotiated with. It must be recognized for what it is and we must all recognize the new age of American politics it has wrought. It has reset the debate 7/

Entirely. There are only two sides in American politics now. There is the American side and the Autocratic side. May God help us all if we falter, flag or fail in defense of American democracy. 8

The fact that McConnell is starting to lose his pull over this issue is a huge sign. These people are out of control, and have absolutely no idea the damage they are doing — not that they would care anyway.

Someone will start an OP about Schmidt or TLP and then some insufferable, binary thinking purity clod will chime in with “what about Steve from 20 years ago!?!11”

You can practically set your watch to it.

Despite the fact that Steve is precisely the kind of intelligent (ex)GOP-er we want to see join forces with the Democrats.

Some people just seem to need something to bitch about.

I think the scales started to fall from his eyes with Palin. Trump was finally enough to make him bolt.

Meghan McCain can be pretty awful at times but she is an example of the "old" repub party Schmidt is talking about, while vile cretin and AZ repub party head Kelli Ward is an example of the trumpistas who have taken it over.

They are currently in a spat in which Ward declared: "As the sun sets on 2020, remember that we're never going back to the party of Romney, Flake, and McCain." Quite a statement about your party's first or second most revered pol of all time (the other being Barry Goldwater who if around would despise the Wards and drumpf traitors as much as anyone.

...a considered and rational thought process, a Trump like simplistic and sarcastic approach to politics will still win elections in all too many places in this country. I am heartened by the grass roots door to door efforts I see by activists in GA and I dearly hope that the national Dem establishment learns that while peoples' best long term interests may be better served by Dem vs. Repub policies, many are not ready for the change and thought and effort that may take to accomplish. What wins Dem elections in Brooklyn, does exactly the opposite in rural Iowa. We need to find the common ground and build a foundation on that and then begin a new grand edifice. Will take more good thought rather than just electioneering and it will be incremental not an overnight revolution.

Democrats will depend on old time Republican moderates, and they've not been very compatible for years. Dems will be dragged into the middle.

And the Radicals on the right are armed.

A "civil war" inside the Republican Party will commence on January 6, according to Steve Schmidt, a GOP strategist who co-founded the Lincoln Project.

In lengthy thread on Twitter Sunday, Schmidt said the Republican Party will divide into "irreconcilable factions" when Congress meets on Wednesday to certify Joe Biden's victory in 2020 election.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers have announced their intention to oppose the Electoral College certification, backing President Donald Trump's ongoing effort to overturn the election result.

Trump has continued to allege his defeat was due to widespread voter fraud, despite election officials concluding there were no irregularities that would have affected the outcome of the vote.

GOP splintering before our eyes.
Some will form the Trump crazy party.
Some GOP going independent.
Some GOP joining the Dems.
If you look, you can see the pieces breaking apart and forming new connections.
