Pro-Trump Republicans are handing Dems a weapon - and it could be an 'abject disaster' for the party

On CNN this Tuesday, host Anderson Cooper asked conservative commentator Scott Jennings what he thinks the effect on democracy will be regarding President Trump and certain Republicans' attempts to undermine confidence in elections.

Several Republican senators have said they will object when Congress convenes on Wednesday to accept President-elect Joe Biden's electoral college victory.

"The democratic system depends on winners and losers and the acceptance of the results," Jennings said. "Unfortunately over the last 20 years, we've had people on both parties who've refused to accept the results."

"I frankly, as a Republican and someone who supports the electoral college and is worried about the long-term impact on the health of the electoral college -- these Republicans right now who are leading this effort are handing Democrats the single greatest argument that there ever was and has ever been made to abolish the Electoral College -- which would be an abject disaster for the Republican Party, which tends not to win the national popular vote."

"...we've had people on both parties who've refused to accept the results."

How far did those go, Chuckles? On the Democratic side, I mean. How far did challenges to Bush's 2000 victory get taken? (Even after a post mortem by a consortium of media found that a full statewide recount would have flipped Florida for Gore?) Nowhere, that's how far. Democrats did not attempt to overthrow the election.

What about in 2016? What actual challenges took place? For all the claims about spying, the thing that best argues how specious those claims are is the fact that the "spies" didn't leak anything. The DoJ's actions only hurt Trump's opponent. And Hillary did not challenge the results at all.

Compare that to the Lord of the Flies theater going on now to contest Biden's win.

Boys, the story isn't "both sides need to cover ground to score" when the ball is on the 5 yard line.

And if you even hint that it is, you're a goddamn liar.

There would need to be considerable majorities of Dems in Congress to abolish the electoral college because the Repubs would never support that for very good reasons.

The only thing that could possibly circumvent that is something I read about some years ago: If enough states (accounting for 270+ electoral votes) would agree to award their votes to the popular vote winner, it would essentially mean the end of the electoral college.

enough states implementing this to make it a done deal. I certainly hope so. This mess we have now is unsustainable.

We allowed Shrub to steal it twice and Dump to steal it once.

Enuff is enuff.

Truth is if all the votes were not suppressed and actually counted, we would have had Democratic presidents since 1993.

Again it is like it’s all an uphill climb for Democrats between the Electoral College and the makeup of the Senate....as in sparsely populated States like Montana, Wyoming, etc, getting the same 2 Senators that California, New York and other heavily populated States.
