The miscreant who went after Big Bird made the same mistake as Joseph McCarthy did a long time ago..

He Accused Ike's minister of Pinko shenanigans and then McCarthy showed up at a get together and went up to Ike, who turned his back on him and walked away. That was the beginning of the end for THAT asshole...this was the beginning for THIS asshole.

That's probably true. Anita Hill's quiet dignity in the face of despicable conduct, but that's about it.

On a day when so many are talking about American Douchebag Jack Welch, I prefer to remember American Hero Joseph Welch.

"Mr. McCarthy, I will not discuss this further with you. You have sat within six feet of me and could have asked me about Fred Fisher. You have seen fit to bring it out, and if there is a God in heaven it will do neither you nor your cause any good. I will not discuss this further. I will not ask Mr. Cohn any more questions. You, Mr. Chairman, may if you will, call the next witness." (CHEERING)

That's when people used to know how to speak.

Wanted nothing to do with him, and wouldn't even acknowledge him. He did work behind the scenes to bring him down.

Another president, Lyndon Johnson, then a powerful Senator, encouraged McCarthy to keep going, knowing full well he'd hang himself with his own rope.
