Gov. Ron DeSantis spars with CNN reporter over state's COVID-19 vaccine rollout, blames hospital

officials in one county

During a tense exchange with a CNN reporter on Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blamed the largest hospital operator in Southwest Florida for causing seniors in one county to wait in long lines and even camp overnight for access to COVID-19 vaccinations

Lee Health, a publicly operated health care organization, did not respond directly to DeSantis' charges when asked about them Tuesday. But Lee Health spokesman Jonathon Little said the organization is doing its best to distribute its limited amount of vaccine.

DeSantis on Monday was responding to a question from CNN's Rosa Flores in Miami. DeSantis repeatedly tried to cut off Flores before she could finish her question. Here is the exchange, in part:

Flores: "My full question is what went wrong with the rollout of the vaccine when we've seen phone lines jammed, websites crashing..."

DeSantis: "So, you're repeating your question."

Flores: "To complete it for you, governor, we've seen websites crash and also senior citizens waiting overnight for the vaccine..."

I've heard from friends trying to get the vaccination from the Leon County Health Department. One person drove by - the lines were extremely long. She tried to check the website. First the sign up page was down, then it it finally loaded, two days later, every appointment was filled through mid-February, as far ahead as they have it set to do appointments.

My sister is in Hillsborough County. She's heard that their lines are very long at the Health Department. She tried her doctor. His office does not know when or if they will get the vaccines.

I know that when they are available, my doctor's practice (very large with over two dozen doctors in multiple locations) will contact me and my husband to make appointments. I was in yesterday about a possible broken foot and the waiting room was filled with people, some waiting to get their Covid vaccination, some waiting 15-30 minutes after to make sure they will have no reaction. No lines, just have to have an appointment and make time to wait.

And everyone in the place had masks, worn properly!
