John Nichols is the guest on Bob McChesney's FINAL "Media Matters" show - Sun. 2pm EDT - link

I;m really gonna miss this show. It outshines anything the MSM has to offer by a mile.

Media Matters with Bob McChesney
Sundays, 1pm CDT on WILL-AM 580

This Week's Guest
John Nichols

Dear Media Matters Listener,

As the saying goes, all things must pass. This Sunday, October 7, will be the last episode of Media Matters. It has been a difficult decision but one that I must make for personal and professional reasons. It has been a great ride – around 500 original shows in 10 ½ years since the first episode in 2002. And fittingly, my final guest will be John Nichols, who appeared on the very first episode with me.

I want to thank you, the listeners, for your continual support and passion for the show. This is really a love letter to you. Your positive feedback is the only reason the show has run this long; I never thought it would extend more than a few years when I started it. I marvel at the quality of the questions callers have, and my guests often comment on it to me. Some Sundays I can pretty much get out of the way by 1:20 or so.

I also want to thank WILL-AM 580. I doubt there is any other NPR affiliate that would host a program like Media Matters. As you know, I am a WILL nationalist. WILL has stood behind me and supported me at every turn. I will never forget how well the people at WILL have treated me.

So please join John and me this Sunday to celebrate Media Matters and talk about—what else?—media and politics. Lots to chew on!

Bob

Journalist John Nichols

Long time friend and colleague of Bob, John Nichols joins Bob this Sunday.

His most recent book, Uprising, captures the protest movement that captivated the nation and paved the path for Occupy Wall Street. More than 100,000 public employees, teachers, students, and their allies descended on the capital in Madison, Wisconsin after Governor Scott Walker announced his plan to eliminate the right of public sector employees to unionize. Uprising provides an anatomy of the event and its implications for the political future of the nation. As state legislatures across the US (in Ohio and New Hampshire, to name a few) take up union busting measures, Nichols shows how the Wisconsin case is a blueprint for progressives around America who’ve had enough. Uprising will be on of the thank you gifts to Media Matters supporters who contribute in the upcoming pledge drive.

Over the past decade, he has co-authored with Bob It's the Media, Stupid!, Our Media, Not Theirs, Tragedy and Farce: How the American Media Sell Wars, Spin Elections, and Destroy Democracy and, most recently, The Death and Life of American Journalism. McChesney and Nichols are the co-founders of Free Press, the nation's media-reform network, which organizes the biennial National Conferences on Media Reform.

My first suggestion is a show that is broadcast on WNUR called "This is Hell". The show runs from 10:AM to 2;00 PM on Saturday. It's a bit snarky and free form but the basic concept is long format interviews.
They generally do about a half hour interview with serious questions on serious subjects. The guests are people you won't see or hear on corporate media. They are also very knowledgeable on the subject they discuss. They also have regular and irregular correspondents covering different issues and the view from on the ground around the world.

Their programming is often cut short of the scheduled four hours during the college football season.

Been listening to them for ~10 years.

It's the absolute best of what's known as college radio.

BTW, just when is Chuck Mertz gonna finally graduate? He's been on this show for as long as I can remember.
