Everything is shut down and secured. I'm in my sleeping bag typing on my iPad. The temp
is headed for the teens. And the wind is howling. I'll be leaving the lookout at 1500 (3 PM) tomorrow for Bend.
I'll have a performance review, and then retire to a beer hall with some wildland firefighters. We will drink hearty, in our nomex
and blue jerseys (but, please, no yellows!).

(113,338 posts)photographs (having just endured the waldo canyon fire, which, in perspective, was small compared to so many others, I wish all firefighters to be bored out of their skiulls)

In all seriousness, last fire, which was a bad fire (when you lose structures or people, this case both, are bad fires), we had a young reporter going. "Where are the flames?" The three of us older types, were going GET SOME DECAF kid!
A good fire does what fires do, and have done for thousands of years... Manzanita needs fire to sprout, period, and a hot one to boot.

(154,021 posts)were washed and line dried this morning. (A local fire department gave them to us... used, but fine for what we do)
We are ready for the next... and it will come, of that I am sure.
You did well my friend... drink a beer for those of us who will still be getting a nice lungful of smoke this fire season... (Bandana and all)

(45,558 posts)I remember the lookout towers in PA when I was a kid. By the time we were there, they were closed and left to the weather to take them down.
We use to climb all over them. I'm they were no where near as high as yours or as decked out, but for a kid from the city, it was magic,
Thanks again, mac, and have a great fall and winter season....

(28,158 posts)Thank you. I know it's so insignificant, I just don't know exactly how to express my gratitude in a more verbose way.
You've broadened my world. How do you thank a person sufficiently for that?
