I don't know why I can't stop laughing - I've been posting and reading about Big Bird since the debate, but I guess it's tickling my funny bone tonight.
It is just amazing that BIG BIRD is now a big issue in this election.
A MUPPET. Made of yellow feathers.
(Yes, I know we all love Big Bird - except for Mitt apparently.)
But Big Bird is not really real and Mitt Romney is going to lose votes because he attacked a tall yellow non-real bird!
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL !!!
No one in the whole whole could have predicted this or made it up
Romney is his own worst enemy.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the Obama campaign headquarters the past couple of days and heard what all they said about Romney and Big Bird

(14,177 posts)Quite frankly the Big Bird thing went over my head. I was so aghast at the rapid fire lies and Mitt's expressions had me almost exploding with laughter. He looked like a sad puppy dog that for some reason had to hold in a fart, it was comical. So, I had mixed emotions to say the least. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of weird stuff. Anyway, I am just catching on to how bad saying firing Big Bird is and a lot of people haven't heard yet, I know hard to believe. So, we need to get our SAVE BIG BIRD signs out to make sure everyone knows about this.

(452 posts)Already we are seeing parents who are upset post videos of their kids. Twitter hit a record number just when he said it. The Comment is moving and growing. What is happening is the kids are overhearing adults speak and as they do the kids get scared. As the kids get scared the parents see the reality of what is happening on their child's faces. That is where it hits. It's everyone who is effected by Big Bird. We all grew up with him in our childhood. Big Bird is as loved as Howdy Doody was. Think about what happen when kids woke up and found their puppet not on the air of tv that day. That is what Mitt Romney's comment is doing.

Reminds me of "Miracle on 42nd Street" - the scene where the Judge's granddaughter or grandson or son or whatever was pretty upset that Santa Claus was being tried in the grandfather's court room.

(1,588 posts)The OVERWHELMING support of PBS is PRIVATE FUNDING! Public funding for PBS 'drains' .01% of the budget! Yup, That would really make a difference! NOT! But mittens still supports giving billions and billions in subsidies to oil companies and has said he put companies offshore to help people avoid taxes, etc.

(4,138 posts)But it's Santorum, and his brain is full of spiders:
Ive voted to kill Big Bird in the past. I have a record there that I have to disclose. That doesnt mean I dont like Big Bird. You can kill things and still like them, maybe to eat them, I dont know. Thats probably that."
Somebody should ask Gingrich what he thinks - that crafty old wretch would probably figure out a way to twist the knife a bit without being too obviously disloyal.

(4,138 posts)Absurd - Big Bird is a damn Muppet, the imagery of Romney "firing" Big Bird" is just ludicrous as the flood of image macros over the last couple of days has shown. Plus it's so incredibly petty and spiteful, especially coming from Romney's background as Mr. Bigshot CEO. I wonder if he had to be talked out of cackling "Excellent" while rubbing his hands together when they wrote that bit.
Sentimental - What's the first thing that politicians learn to say at politician school? "Children are the future of our country," followed by "My highest (actually lowest) priority is educating our young." Any of you cinephile or history nerds that have seen Triumph of the Will know that even Hitler was an ace at kissing babies and smiling. So here's Romney, all relaxed and fired up for debate, but hampered by poor likeability polls. He's running circles around Obama with his unholy mixture of carnival barker/Reaganomics, when he pauses, looks into the eyes of America and says "and by the way, Kids, Fuck you." So now Youtube is hammered with adorable kids mad at Romney for being mean to Big Bird. How could he have possibly thought there was any upside to this? Plus, Big Bird has been a beloved part of our culture for nearly half a century. Gens X and Y grew up with him, and the Boomers that raised us are fond of him for being a good role model. I thought the jokes about how Romney is a robot that doesn't 'get' human emotion were just a humorous exaggeration, but now I'm not so sure.
Serious - Republicans have been playing this shell game as long as I have been following politics (around Iran-Contra, though I remember being aware that my parents were disappointed in the 80 and 84 elections). They complain about the profligate spending of the Dems, and lecture about fiscal responsibility, but when pressed about what spending they would cut, it's always some chicken-scratch thing like PBS or the NEA that won't make a dent in the budget, and which produce cultural (and often raw economic) benefit far out of proportion to the small investment. Meanwhile any talk of doing anything that might actually significantly lowering the deficit, like raising taxes on the wealthy, or reining in our defense budget is obviously crazy talk from people that want America to fail. Romney is trying to claim that he can solve our budgeting woes while also delivering a huge tax cut to his friends by slashing 1-2% (if he's lucky) of the budget on a grab-bag of stuff the GOP already hates.

(452 posts)I doubt Romney was stupid enough to practice the Big Bird part. What I think happen is Romney went in thinking he was on fire and added to the zinger.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)I think Romney had all these zingers planned for the things he expected Obama to say during the speech. Instead Obama didn't really say much of anything and Romney had no clue what zingers to use when during his part of the debate. So after awhile Romney just relied on all the stuff he's been using for his campaign speeches, which btw work well with the faithful but not with the undecideds, and somehow he put Big Bird in the middle of the bulleyes.
