In what can be considered one of the tackiest possible actions, the NYPD has sent a bill for repairs to the car that ran over the fleeing suspect to the family of the deceased.
My dark humor wonders if the NYPD should have taken out the optional insurance to protect against uninsured pedestrians.
My wife would say. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

On Edit. I remembered a story where China would bill the families of executed prisoners for the bullet. After a very brief search, I found the link. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/03/12/1047431092598.html
Apparently the NYPD felt that this practice was one that it needed to emulate.

(14,177 posts)A car is not a weapon and I don't think stealing pavers is even something a weapon should be drawn for anyway. They shouldn't have just told him to put the stones down or whatever. It's a petty crime and at the most worth going downtown for booking or whatever spend the night in jail, be ordered to pay restitution. Sure didn't warrant the death penalty by car verdict. I don't buy that it was an accident.

(14,177 posts)I meant to say a car shouldn't be used as a deadly weapon. Especially when the crime in question is a petty crime.

(34,179 posts)God knows, the current state of the NYPD really disinclines me from even visiting NYC at this point. Trouble is, their intelligence officers are visiting my area, and apparently setting up office.

(3,891 posts)The asinine argument they use is that NY is the most probable target, so jurisdiction doesn't really matter all that much. It's a shame that New Jersey has a nut job for a Governor, A Democrat would take umbrage at the offensive actions of the NYPD, self appointed police of the nation.
