Rosario Dawson: “There Is a Sadness to the Latino American Voter”

When it comes to the Latino vote, candidates often believe the best way to reach Latino voters is through Spanish-language media. But Rosario Dawson, actress and founder of Voto Latino, a non-partisan group that works to encourage Latinos to vote, said this is a common misconception.

On “The Gavin Newsom Show," Dawson said 79 percent of Latinos consume information in English. She said that Latino voters are on Facebook, Twitter and English-language news sites, learning about where the candidates stand.

Dawson said:

They are hearing what you are saying about them in English and then watching the same stuff in Spanish and going, 'wait a minute, you just said I was illegal a second ago and now you're trying to get my vote in Spanish? Wait a minute.' There is a sadness to the Latino American voter. If they get registered and vote, they have a lot to say and they are paying attention. They are definitely a big part of the conversation right now.

Mitt Romney has been calling undocumented immigrants “ illegals” for years, and has continued throughout his campaign. However, on his interview with Univision, a leading Spanish-language network, Romney called immigrant youth simply “kids [who] deserve something better than temporary. They deserve a permanent solution.”

No other celebrity has been more of a bitter disappointment to me than Arlo. I loved him when I was a teeenager.

A registered Republican, Guthrie endorsed Texas Congressman Ron Paul for the 2008 Republican Party nomination. He said, "I love this guy. Dr. Paul is the only candidate I know of who would have signed the Constitution of the United States had he been there. I'm with him, because he seems to be the only candidate who actually believes it has as much relevance today as it did a couple of hundred years ago. I look forward to the day when we can work out the differences we have with the same revolutionary vision and enthusiasm that is our American legacy."[10] He told The New York Times Magazine that he is a Republican because, "We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition."[11]

How someone can watch their father die of Huntington's disease, face the disease themselves and then not dedicate their lives to universal health care is fucking unbelievable to me.

I remember remarking to my hubby that IF *ush actually DID any of the good stuff he said he would in his STOU address, then he would have been a much better pResident**.

In FACT, if he praised a group, and got his photo op, the next thing he'd do is go trash their funding somehow.

10. The biggest issue

Nearly 24 million Latinos are eligible to vote in this year’s election — up by four million since 2008. This record number of voters could influence the election. Most importantly, they make up a significant amount of the population in Florida and South Carolina, two swing states who have reported an increase in Latino voter registrations. If candidates want to garner support from this important group they must realize that their one interview on Univision empathizing with the Latino community isn’t going to do the trick.

The 9.7 percent isn't of the number of registered Latino voters, but of the national vote totals. In 2008, participation was 50 percent of registered Latino voters. From Pew:

Due to their ongoing population growth, Latinos comprise a greater share of the nation’s eligible voters than they did just a few years ago—11.0% this year, up from 9.5% in 2008 and 8.2% in 2004 (Lopez and Taylor, 2009).

However, the turnout rate of eligible Latino voters has historically lagged that of whites and blacks by substantial margins. In 2008, for example, 50% of eligible Latino voters cast ballots, compared with 65% of blacks and 66% of whites (Lopez and Taylor, 2009).

12. Republicans need to learn....

It's not just how you say things, what you say matters.

Putting out ads in Spanish with no or conflicting information is classic PR crap. In the vernacular, I think it's called polishing a turd.

Thankfully, Hispanic voters of all stripes are more intelligent than the typical fundie that constitutes the Repub base.

I love how the article points out an obvious fact that the Repubs don't seem to get. Most Hispanics in this country are bi-lingual. If they hear the same commercial in two different languages, they had better hear them say the same things or alarm bells will go off in their heads.

Thanks to the internet, it's much harder for candidates to say one thing in one place and another thing somewhere else.
