For months Romney has run a campaign completely devoid of detail.
Nothing but ambiguous headlines. "More apple pie, less Soviet Union".
This is one of the main lessons he learned from earlier attempts; give details and get picked apart, don't give details and run on singing "America the Beautiful", it has worked pretty well up until now. If people really knew what he wanted to do he wouldn't have gotten the nomination and he would running ahead in about 7 states.
It is actually very clever of him because any detailed proposal he puts forth is going to be picked apart from the right and the left, and the middle too. If there was any easy answer to budget issues then we would have already found them and Romney has more to fear from alienating the Tea Party than anything else. Many of them would love to support a thrid party run.
So going into the debate they got together and concluded that they would have to come out with one simple concrete proposal. It would have to be decisive and easily understood. It would have to be in the Tea Party wheel house and seem reasonable to everyone else.
After hundreds of hours over months and months a simple but direct line was crafted; They would get America to stop borrowing from China to spend on frivolous things. What is the most frivolous thing that the federal government spends money on? Big Bird and PBS.
So the line was honed and practiced.
Mitt delivered it perfectly, even with enthusiasm and a bit of enjoyment.
And all the public heard was that Romney was really a son of a bitch and he really does enjoy firing people, even iconic children's shows and characters.
And among all of the glee about the debate the jobs report comes out compromising everything Mitt said about the economy and taxes which was suspect because of that whole 47% debacle.
And the only lingering memory of the debate will be this somewhat manic guy who loved to fire Big Bird, and well everybody loves Big Bird.
And some people say there is no supreme being.
If this continues then a week from now the only thing that is remembered about the first debate is that the President was very sincere and a little bit boring and that Romney was very manic and seemed to get a high talking about firing people and getting rid of some of the best millions that the government does spend on.
Maybe there is a God after all and she has a superb sense of humor.
In any case you can imagine Romney now yelling at his staff "not one more gall darned detail for the rest of the campaign".

(18,636 posts)Not Obama, that they shorthand to "Nobama".
That's all the Republicans have is racial hatred, not grand ideas.

(20,998 posts)All the republicans have is hatred for the uppity Black man that DARED to get himself elected President of the United States.
And to add insult to injury, that uppity Black man won the election fair and square. No electoral fraud, no fancy lawyers, no partisan SCOTUS. Fair and square. And it just fucking kills them.

(18,636 posts)His opinion was that Obama only won because black people voted. He told me he saw "a lot of them" voting that day.
I asked him what he thought the percentage is of African Americans in this country (I already knew). He guessed around 35% or so. When I told him the answer is just over 12% he balked until he saw it himself online. Then he effortlessly shifted to Hispanics, saying that "there are a whole lot more of them". No... Blacks represent the largest minority group by far.
Then he started talking about the Browns... football team.
My point is, no matter how much you shoot down one's racial prejudices, it doesn't change what they believe.

(85,998 posts)The Romney campaign likes to say that Mitt makes all of the decisions. As tone deaf as he's been to the sound of his own bull, 'Big Bird' sounds like his own ignorant doing. I full expect more of the same. His ego tells him that all of the lies and distortions his party has promoted and proliferated have some basis in reality. His campaign is behind because they're busy fighting the ghosts and inventions from their own narrow minds; instead of their actual rival.

(20,629 posts)out the argument beautifully and nailed down every relevant aspect of it!
I just stated that the "Big Bird" remark was the "money shot zinger" that his campaign was hyping all week long, and it ended up blowing up in his face like a cheap novelty cigar!

Mitt Romney's Big Bird Attack Threatens Thousands Of U.S. Jobs
Mitt Romney may want to kill Big Bird, but when the giant yellow bird flaps his wings, money comes flying out.
In short, Big Bird is a job creator. Hear him squawk!
