(53,853 posts)years and years of institutional knowledge in preparing security for mass events like this. There's the State of the Union message every year. There are Head of State visits all the time, big protest events multiple times a year, an inauguration every four years.
Who are they kidding. They know how to do this stuff and all of a sudden they don't do it?
Things seem to be point directly at them being complicit with trump's easily sniffed out putsch attempt.

Parking at our courthouse in 2.5 blocks away. Had to walk all the way back to car.
Worst part: I get to registrar's office, and they tell me that copies of marriage & birth certificates are at the Recorder's Office. That's in a different building, 1.5 miles away, where parking is right in front, and there's no magnetometer to enter.
All that, and I wasn't even in the right place!

(54,770 posts)We should have been prepared with every Capitol policeperson on site (there are 2000 of them) in riot gear, local police blocking the roads, and National Guard requested days ago, etc.
As to the NG, I bet they were hesitant to request them beforehand after what happened when trump had troops on the steps back in the summer.
Heck, I don't think some of the Capitol Police were even armed. One poor guy was trying to stop the white wingers was waving a stick or something.

This is the reason why the DC Mayor (being made a scapegoat) asked for less of their presence ... BUT ... NG is on call IINM and MD NG was at the ready but weren't authorized.
According to Hogan they kept being denied or ignored, this wasn't the Mayors fault the MD State, NG, and DC police were all available but were turned down

(58,785 posts)the resignation of the DC chief and the sergeants at arms of both the house and senate. These are high executive positions responsible for all aspects of Capitol security. Until order is guaranteed, in spite of the mess yesterday, you'd think they'd want them to stay in their positions. Instead, they're all out immediately.
My great sympathy to the good people of these institutions. A Capitol Police officer died tonight of his wounds. Approximately 50 were injured. Morale must be dreadful as honorable officers realize they're working alongside trumpist traitors, and traitors defiantly believe they are the true patriots.

(58,785 posts)Where I was inaccurate was that Mr. Sund's resignation was tendered the same day but will become effective on the 16th. He's chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, a federal agency, not the Metropolitan Police Department, "DC Police."
But as for Speaker Pelosi having no technical authority, even if it were the case, which it is not, why bother to mention it as if it would matter? Mr. Sund's whole job is to protect congress. The speaker of the House of Representatives not only has a big interest in that, to put it mildly, she's enormously powerful, burn some people's asses as that may.
Btw, the Speaker is one of a number of people in line of succession to the presidency who were endangered that day, the second in line right after Pence, third was there also and I don't know who else.

(15,290 posts)I think it was on Maddow's show. He said the MD national guard was ready to go, but it took over 90 minutes for authorization to come from the WH. Apparently Hoyer called Hogan from wherever he was hiding and asked him to send the MD Guard. Hogan was ready and willing, but couldn't get immediate authorization, then he got a direct call from Sec of the Army with the go-ahead. Hogan wasn't told why the delay or able to figure out what was going on.
It will interesting to see what, if anything, Northam has to say about deploying the VA national guard.

(8,758 posts)The Executive Branch is the governor of DC. So they, via the Sec. Def. approve and coordinate LEO, government security, and military support.
There were no preparations.
DC Metro police were in the dark.
Park Police and Capitol Police were told it was a normal day.
There were deliberate orders to under staff and under equip various agencies in the area that are under Pentagon supervision.
No one was there to take calls, Sec. Def, POTUS when the assault occurred. Pence was secured in the Capitol.
The states of Maryland and Virginia readied support forces and begged to be allowed in and were denied for hours.
Hours later, a call was made and support flooded in the city.
This is too much for simple incompetence.
