Cover of the NYTimes Website: Obama Loses Debate!? No. "Democrats and Obama Pull In $181 Million in September" (WIN for Obama) "Romney Claims of Bipartisan Success Face Challenge" Story about Romney lying in debate. (Win for Obama) and "Some in G.O.P. Choose to Return to Akins Corner" an article tying the GOP to Whack Job Akin. (win Dems)
Washington Post Website: "Obama campaign closes in on $1B fundraising total" winner obama) ,"A busy week in the campaign, but how consequential?" article about debate impact vs. jobs report impact (draw). Their five most popular stories:
1. Obama close to raising $1 billion after near-record September tally (win Obama)
2. After 14 years in power, Hugo Chavez confronts a tough challenger in Venezuela election
3. Mitt Romney is worth $250 million. Why so little? (taxes, write offs, tax free and offshore accounts LOSE Romney)
4. The Rumble 2012: Bill O'Reilly and Jon Stewart ready to debate in D.C.
5. Fall in jobless rate strips Romney of an argument (win Obama)
LA Times: Obama campaign raised $181 million in September, Gas prices set a record in California (link to article about electric cars...win: electric cars) Man impales himself on fence in Lincoln Heights (It's LA, they aren't very political there).
So...If I am not making my point clear enough: Yes, Obama was quiet and factual and non-confrontational, just like he always is. Yes, the President failed to toot toot toot his own horn, just like like he always does. Yes, Obama failed to go for blood in his politicking, just like he always does. And the left was furiously disappointed that he was so damned centrist, just like they always are. And in the end it isn't news because what happened is exactly what happened last time Obama debated anybody. He was mellow, factual, and he made his opponent look like an idiot who lied, bellowed, interrupted, and, most importantly, let Romney show just how dislikeable he is. And during the whole debate the President was right there in the middle winning over the middle, just like he did last time and not once did he allow Romney a chance to change his tune on the 47%, or his taxes or his trustability. By keeping his cool and silence on those hot-button issues, he did not allow Romney to change public opinion on those unpopular issues. Everyone who disliked the 47% comments feels the same way today as they did before the debate, everyone who wants to see the taxes is still unsatisfied and everyone who was disgusted by the overseas accounts remains disgusted.
So the big news a few days after the debate is this: Romney lied, lied some more, then lied a few more times, the President has HUGE grass roots support, Romney is hiding his net worth and taxes and some guy fell on a pointy stick.
So, feel free to rub in my face how the President lost, but in my account, the President is a better chess player than you, he was a better chess player than Hillary and Bill Clinton, he is a hell of a lot better than mittens and he is quietly setting up his checkmate.
And I can't wait to savor every delicious moment of it.
