By inciting insurrection Trump just took a hatchet to any shred of Teflon that might have at least partially protected him post presidency. Nixon escaped prosecution because there was a significant desire felt by many to "move on" and heal America without sowing further division and discord that the prosecution of the last sitting President could cause. Yes a pardon by Ford was the vehicle used to fast forward past the consequences of Nixon's crimes, but Ford did not have the impulse to issue that pardon in isolation.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was not eager to go after George W. Bush after he left office, and President Elect Joe Biden was not counting the days until Donald Trump could be prosecuted. It's possible that even State officials might have felt at least somewhat constrained in how vigorously they pursued Donald Trump once he left the presidency, in the interests of domestic tranquility.
That's all over now. With just 14 days left to ride out his term in the White House, Trump just made it impossible for America to simply turn the page on him to avoid a potentially dangerous spectacle of making Trump a defendant to serious charges against him. He just sealed his own dismal fate, whether he knows it yet or not.

(22,913 posts)but the damage to him has already happened. Further rioters and rioting will not reverse the course and can not cover his back. And those with sufficient influence to potentially mitigate the price Trump now will pay, have either lost the motivation to do so or have lost much of the influence they once could have exercised on his behalf.
