This is feeling like the same thing

(7,637 posts)Interestingly there are reports that Graham went to tell Trump that there are enough votes to convict him in the senate..

(47,382 posts)But what Nixon did was child's play compared to this.
And the times are much worse now.

It is way more deadly now.
But I hear you on the political assassinations and violence.
It still feels far worse to me now.

(1,102 posts)Nixon had at least some shame left. Trump will take the gamble with bravado and roll the dice on a senate vote. The republicans of 1974 were not as cultish as the republicans of today.

(15,320 posts)they hadn't just been forced under their seats almost shitting their pants while calling their loved ones to say goodbye with an angry, dangerous mob right outside the door, either. That might have an effect.

(2,396 posts)and we didn't have a tv, in true hippie fashion.
But I happened to go to my parents and Nixon was on tv giving his resignation speech. I said Aw, look the lion is crying and my dad told me to shut up.
That's all I remember but in my own defense, growing up in the turbulence of the '60's had made me pretty immune to national crisis.

Watergate had been dragged out for over a year.
I was surprised..Afterward, I went to a bar with my friends (illegally, they were all 18 but me). My boyfriend showed after he got off work.

(14,061 posts)Events moved quickly when it became obvious that Nixon wasnt going to avoid impeachment.
I can see Trump up and quitting he can go out in sound and fury yet still save face.
I dont care how he goes...just so he GOES. Enough.

(6,918 posts)I worked nights, so I watched many hours of the hearings on TV. There is a big difference, Nixon resigned and Ford waited a few weeks before pardoning him.
Here we have a true psychopath who will do anything to stay in power. Even Nixon had limits to his corruption, Trump doesn't. Nixon had fewer enablers who stuck by him after his crimes became obvious.
Trump will probably not be convicted in the senate trial, Nixon didn't have to be.

(16,937 posts)Pennsylvania had a MODERATE REPUBLICAN Senator (Hugh Scott) and he was one of the members of the gang that went to Nixon to tell him there was no way he would survive an impeachment trial.
Scott would probably be drummed out of his party now.....

(9,674 posts)Things were changing that you couldn't really put a finger on and increasingly came to a head then all of the sudden, boom, he resigned. Of course, the circumstances, people, political culture and situations were different but these current events are evoking the same sort of feeling.
The best I can describe it would be a "quickening".
A quickening, that's how I remember it.

(4,590 posts)of congratulations on his re-election win. I remember seeing all of the hearings on the boob tube but not understanding what was up. I remember sitting in our living room watching him board the helicopter. My dad was depressed. I just watched "All the President's Men" the other day.
