(21,557 posts)and in the things he said that he would refuse to accept a loss and would resort to violence.
I expected him to stir up street violence as an excuse to declare an emergency and martial law to hold power and then switch immediately to absolutism and dictatorship. That was less likely when the military made it clear they would have no part of it.
Never did it occur to me that he would incite his followers to physically attack a branch of government and threaten their lives, seeking to take hostages in Congress. Or that it would fail so badly that the whole nation (except his zealots) would shut him down and isolate him.

(21,557 posts)says to expect more threats of violence and things like caravans intimidating people. He says the Trump zealots are hell bent on bringing about a revolution, a civil war, and won't stop until defeated. Therefore, he says it is crucial to investigate, bring charges, and rein in the militias.

(2,574 posts)Who, right or wrong, are still trying to drive English fascists from Ireland, after 1000 years of English occupation, brutal oppression, abuse, rape, murder, and genocide. They are no longer violent, having the understanding that they are more likely to unite the 6 counties with the Republic of Ireland through peaceful democratic means, due to native Irish folks population increasing in the 6 Counties, and the English population decreasing. The fascist DUP's days are numbered.
So the overwhelming majority of native Irish folks don't approve of IRA violence continuing, but all know and understand what the English did to Ireland, and there is still lingering, smoldering resentment. The old IRA was instrumental in eventually driving the English fascists from all but 6 counties in Ireland, during the War for Independence and beyond.
Trump supporters, on the other hand, are nothing but deluded fascist rebels without a clue.

(21,557 posts)They are celebrating the attack on the Capitol as the opening battle. If they continue, which they likely will, it will be as you said, not a "traditional" war between two opposing armies. It will be a war of terrorists against a government and society that they disapprove of. Our defense will be the FBI, CIA, courts, and guarded sites and locations. The terrorist groups will need to be routed out and defeated.

(5,125 posts)Right now they are trying to claim "civil disobedience" but they aren't patriots in any real sense. THEY BELIEVE their cause is just because they have BEEN LIED TO REPEATEDLY by the Reich Wing Propaganda machine and tRump and CO.
But any "Patriot" who would attack The Capitol with all those people in it is delusional. We need the full force of the Patriot Act to use the agencies you listed, plus NSA and Homeland Security.
IF Texas (for example) actually secedes, then we would be looking at Civil War as the "states" have some right to demand changes in the way the government is run. But they are STILL going to be forced to work towards change on a procedural level first. AND NO, CHANGING THE RULES in the MIDDLE of the ELECTION is NOT a PROCEDURAL CHANGE.
EACH STATE has Sovereignty of their process, so those states that chose to expand "mail in ballot processes" were within THEIR rights. OTHER STATES trying to OVERTURN their election results is different than the basic challenge to make sure it got done correctly. THAT has been reviewed over and over. "SO MOVE ON and deal with the facts" is what the county is asking them.
BUT HOW CAN THEY when tRump is still claiming he won?
He has to be labeled as delusional and put in a mental ward for the safety of the whole country. AND all the FAKE Media that is spouting these lies needs to be shut down or FINED in the millions for EACH offense, so they STOP or face bankruptcy. THEN and only then will the waterfall of disinformation slow down enough for people to be able to listen to anything else.
ONLY when the flat out truth is able to be stated without INSANITY rebuttals being seen as anything but lies will there be air time enough to explain all the ways each of tRump's thousands of lies have been fact checked and debunked. But with the Reich Wing Radio Network screaming in the background, the truth doesn't stand a chance and neither do we.

(21,557 posts)term "civil war" refers to internal fighting between people of the same nation, region, or organization? It has nothing to do with the word "civility" or with the term "civil disobedience." It does not have to be between states within the US, or over a state seceding.
For example, when the US invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam's government, Iraqis fell into civil war, largely of Sunni Muslims vs Shi'ite Muslims, but not always so clearly divided.
The Spanish civil war of the 1930s involved ideology as well as regionalism. Left vs right, rural vs urban, monarchists vs people who supported a republic, fascists vs socialists.
The political and ideolgical divide in the US began long before Trump entered politics. Trump represents the things that people on the political right support, from economic conservatism to RW extremism, fascism, and racism. He did not originate those movements and ideologies. He became their leader and spokesperson by appealing to them in his 2016 campaign and representing their interests while in office and during the 2020 campaign.
I have never heard any of the far right groups claim to support civil disobedience. They are much more openly belligerent than that and proudly so with their weapons displayed and their calls for violent revolution.
I fully agree that we need to go after them aggressively and shut down the terrorist militia groups. But in the process, we also need to be careful not to destroy the liberties we are fighting for.
