Why is this not a gift?
The really big good result of impeachment and conviction is barring Trump from ever holding office in the future.
Do we have to thank McConnell?????

(7,637 posts)and the gop senators would simply say Trump is out its futile and not convict.

(31,261 posts)The Special Prosecutor puts it into the Courts and laws apply. That stands a better chance of bringing a Trump to justice. Also, the investigation would highlight the widespread nature of him crimes.
I honestly believe that when faced with going to prison, Trump will off himself.

(7,637 posts)the impeachment and conviction is not a criminal trial. Nothing stops the Biden administration to indict him after the 20th.

(31,261 posts)I really dont care when we get to one of those ends. I just think impeachment is impractical given that McConnell wont convict. The only real decent outcome of impeachment now is that it marks him for history as a twice impeached President and Historians would write volumes about why that happened. But unless we totally and permanently out vote them, republicans being republicans, will find a way to impeach a future Democratic President twice, that is why I favor an investigation and trial by Courts. If Trump is the only President that was impeached once and convicted by a jury of his peers for crimes in Court and imprisoned, that is a stink that future republicans wont be able to erase.

(10,274 posts)Yertle can say, 'I have no power I'm just the Minority Leader.'
Either way, he can mostly wash his hands of it, but this way he can punt it over to Schumer, and theres still a possibility that he will have his revenge on Dear Leader for costing him his Majority.
The truth ALSO is that if trump is unable to run again, it open greater paths for guys like Hawley and Cruz to throw their hats in the ring...they can work to keep trumps base on board for the down-ticket senate races...and possibly put Mitch back in the Majority.
All while Yertle (mostly) gets to absolve himself.
Clever...

(44,974 posts)With McConnell delaying a trial until Trump has to leave regardless, Trump is not going to be removed.

(31,261 posts)Honestly, I would forget impeachment and simply let a Special Prosecutor that doesnt have Barr or Trump in his or her way investigate - Trump could still be charged with crimes later and be sent to prison.

(14,985 posts)Also, by doing nothing, McConnell and the GrOPers are responsible (in the court of public opinion) for everything Trump does between impeachment and inauguration. This may make them try harder to lean on the people around Trump to keep the worst from happening.
Also, let's not forget if somehow he can be convicted by the Democratically controlled Senate, their next move would be to ban him from federal office for life.

However, from what I have heard tonight, this is really urgent. Message Mitch via his website!

(1,584 posts)So if we were to get that many Republicans to convict, we could certainly have enough to oust McConnell. That they are adjourned until the 19th probably screws that up though.
Regardless, the House needs to proceed and hopefully there will be consequences for Republicans if they sit on it. And any further craziness is on them. And if things calm down then that is the goal anyway.
