WTF is an undecided voter?

Last edited Sat Oct 6, 2012, 11:44 PM - Edit history (1)

Seriously. I know we here on DU all have strong opinions and so do those on the right l, but when you look at what the right and left stand for in the US I can see only 3 choices, I'm voting for the rethugs cause that's the type of asshole I am, I'm voting for the dems, or I'm not voting at all cause I'm disaffected. But to say you ARE voting but are just undecided makes it seem like you have no values IMHO.

my son told me tonight the mom and dad are leaning toward obama.

i would say that is an undecided. i dont get it, but hey, two more in this area going for obama or even considering it is pretty HUGE for us.

and were just caught being polled. In "large turnout" elections, we still only get about 60% of the registered voters actually voting.

But take a few of my relatives. They have a list of desiderata for their winning candidate. Most are based on values; some are based also on self-interest.

They don't like either candidate. They loathe Obama for some of his policies. They loathe Romney for some of his stances. But they have to decide because they're certainly going to vote. They're not going to decide until election day or several days before. Once they decide they have to live with their decision, and nothing's come along to make them at peace with either possibility. The longer they wait, the more likely something will come along to help them have an easier decision. If nothing like that comes along, the longer they wait the less time they have to live with a decision they don't like and the less time they'll be bothered with second-guessing their decision.

I don't personally know anyone who's undecided. My family members, except for my mother, vote Republican because of their jobs, although they're progressive-minded on social issues. Perhaps they'll come around when they retire -- fingers crossed.

attention to politics.

Last night I overheard someone I know, in apparent response to some kind of political comment, say that she never pays attention to politics because she's too busy. I have no idea if she'll be voting. Oh, and she has no way of knowing I overheard her, since she could not see me at the time, and I didn't want to bring it up. We're friendly, but not friends, and I'm not good at arguing politics since I tend all too quickly to get incoherent with rage, especially at ignorance.

15. I know an undecided voter...and he's all over the political map

During the summer he said he's probably voting Romney. Then in September, he said he was leaning Obama. Now he's "not sure."

And when you ask him his views on issues...he's all over the place. Like he's far left on some things like against the death penalty, thinks marijuana and prostitution should be legal, supports WikiLeaks, hates the Patriot Act, supports the environment, supports gay marriage, etc.. but he's also pro-life, strongly favors gun rights, favors tax cuts, against Obamacare, wants the Mexican border militarized, etc.. and to top it off, the dude is atheist.

I guess he votes for the guy depending on which issue he feels more strongly about at that particular minute. But overall I would have to say the closest thing I can compare him to is a libertarian.
