(5,969 posts)after a coup attempt looks like. It's amazing that so many thought that trying to overthrow the Government would have no consequences. Actually, it's scary because there is one outcome that wouldn't have ended in jail for them.

(25,492 posts)Barnett is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday. He will ultimately be extradited to Washington, D.C.
The shocking images of Mr. Barnett with his boots up on a desk in the Speaker of the Houses office on Wednesday was repulsive, said Jeffrey A. Rosen, Acting Attorney General of the United States. Those who are proven to have committed criminal acts during the storming of the Capitol will face justice.

The U.S. Capitol is one of the most iconic buildings in our country and a symbol of the Constitution and people we have sworn to protect, and its destruction will not be tolerated, said Steven M. DAntuono, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. This arrest demonstrates to all individuals involved in January 6 incursion into the U.S. Capitol that the FBI will find you and hold you accountable for your crimes, no matter your location. We thank the FBI Little Rock Field Office for their quick assistance in bringing this perpetrator to justice.
Barnett is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds; and theft of public money, property, or records. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors

(15,289 posts)Last night on MSNBC or CNN one of the guests was saying they didn't like it that some of these people were being arrested in their home states presumably to be tried by the local USAs and in front of possibly more sympathetic juries. If this is any indication, that might not be the case.

(2,574 posts)I guess it's pretty much ok to break into the Capitol building, steal and destroy government property, terrorize and endanger House and Senate members while they are certifying Electoral College votes, and participate in a violent insurrection action with intent to overthrow the government.
What are the penalties for violent disruption of a Presidential Inauguration? Something like a month of Community Service, and a $100 fine?
This is extremely encouraging news for violent white supremacist domestic terrorist groups who want to overthrow the government, all across the US.

They put their own safety at risk, and without them we would neither have an understanding of what went on nor been able to identify and prosecute the insurrectionists.

Community service sentencing in addition to jail and probation could be delicious and creative. Make these people do community service for Liberal causes like serving homeless LGBTQ teens. It working with inner city youths. Give these sheltered closed minded fools a chance to learn about the real world.
