impeachment, and in all likelihood, acquittal by the senate, is a rather toothless punishment and no substitute whatsoever for harsher measures with real consequences. even if the senate were to remove him a few days before he's gone anyway, it's of little real consequence.
people need to be tried and convicted and go to prison for 10 years at the bare minimum, and not just some of the random nutjobs who showed up and stormed the capitol. people in the white house, maybe cruz/hawley, maybe some of the capitol police officials.
the media needs to be made to marginalize the authoritarian crap they've been promoting for decades now. i don't know how to do this while respecting the first amendment, but some level of regulation and peer pressure and consequential government decisions are warranted. for instance, the government is certainly free to refuse to do business with companies that advertise and promote programs that advocate violence and bigotry.
to my mind, the only real merit of impeachment is that it becomes an awkward vote for a few republicans. but it's 2 years to the next election, so i don't know how much even that matters.
what really needs to happen is that we need to shore up our democracy and democratic institutions and make them fascist-proof. the next republican president will be more capable one way or another, so we can't make it such that 2024 is the start of the real fascist takover of america.
we've got a *lot* of work to do in the next 4 years. in fact, we may only have 2 years in which to do it.

(32,626 posts)or what crimes can be charged in the future, but the right now. It's pretty pathetic that this kind of shit can happen and no one can do a damn thing about it. He can do anything he wants, and so can his peeps. We're sitting ducks.

He's not gonna leave.
I hate to say this is a real possibility: There will be a standoff with Trump and something really ugly is gone happen. It will not end well. He will not leave on his own.
We need him out of there on Jan 20th, but I'm afraid it will not happen. He will have loyal SS with him. There will be a standoff.....

(9,670 posts)We will need to allocate every single resource available to us to root out and punish the criminals in a very public fashion.
At the same time, we will need to create meaningful legislation and implement it in a very public fashion.
Thank God we have the best team in the world on our side. Let Adam Schiff head up the Congressional effort to wipe the shit stain of fascism off America's posterior.
I love this Democratic Party. We're deep, we're committed, and we're working with a mandate. Let's not waste one moment.
