While we were freaking about the debate, something made it into the psyche

of the "low information voter". Granted, this is anecdotal but I shall now tell you the story of "Terri goes shopping". So, yesterday, with the larder bare and with me being on the hook for Sunday dinner, I decided I needed to go grocery shopping. I removed myself, with some difficulty, from the Sturm and Drang of DU, packed up my reuseable bags and off I went. While at an unnamed multi use grocery store, I heard a couple of college age kids complaining about the adult costumes. Feeling friendly, I butted in and asked what they were looking for. They were looking for Big Bird and they want to use Halloween as a moment of protest against Romney's stated intention of getting rid of PBS. They were mad because Romney is trying to take away Sesame Street! One of them said, "We grew up on that! That is not okay!". LOL

So, after I finished shopping, I went to the thrift store across the street. Now, normally from about Oct 1st to Nov 1st, I don't go there. I hate the way it turns into Halloween central. Otherwise, I am a thrift shopper extraordinaire. I don't think a single person in my family has bought new in well, forever. Why did I go today? Because of those college kids. I figured that they would have Big Bird costumes and now I'm feeling like it would be mighty fine to turn Halloween into an educational moment for voters. I have this idea that I would carry a sign that said, "Big Bird is brought to you by the numbers 4 and 7 and %. I figure people would ask and I could give a quick tutorial. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one, so I asked one of the fairly beleaguered clerks (Halloween must suck for them) and he said, "No, no Big Bird. What is it with Big Bird?!?" (clearly, I wasn't the first to ask). So I explained. He frowned and said, "Hey, that's not cool. I grew up watching that!". I replied, "Yeah, all of us did. Well, maybe not the 1%.". He laughed and said Romney is a rich jerk.

And here I thought it was the 47% comment that sunk the SS RMoney. Nope, it's a giant funny looking bird. Caroll Spinney, I do believe it's time your bird took to the campaign trail for Obama!

On Edit:Rereading this, I realized I left out the starting point. As I was driving to the store, the radio station made a joke about Big Bird being on the chopping block and no, the station wasn't NPR, it was a classic rock station.

The tone of the rest of the brainwashing media, predictably against Obama for telling the truth in a calm manner, I guess the SNL performance about him could have been worse.

You used to be able to count on SNL to be a bit more liberal, as with the rest of the media. These days, not so much. It's bad enough most of what purposes itself as "news" has to be so biased these days. Too bad it seems to have infected the comedy. It isn't even as funny, and if they are trying to impress republicans, they aren't going to get it. They just don't understand humor, unless it directly makes fun of someone for their poverty, or nationality, you know, that sort of thing.

Rmoney already politicized the character and the character ITSELF, who is targeted to children, does NOT need to get drawn in to engage with a pathological liar and his lunatic fringe killing frenzy.

"Politics" is a subject that children will eventually learn as they grow older (both in the household and in school) but it is NOT something the CTW would want to start a precedent on within a children's show, which can lead to using children's programming for rethug brainwashing.

The appearance itself WAS the nod to what happened without giving rethugs more talking point fodder to justify killing the funding.

Big Bird's character is supposed to be a child, along with the innocent naivety. Children don't understand what losing their job means... a lot of them would probably just think, 'hey! more time to play!' Added to that, Sesame Street has never been about politics; it's a utopia where everyone gets along because they all love and respect each other.

This portrayal of Big Bird, as "tame" as it might be, is all the more effective because people will look at that beloved little (big) goof and think to themselves what a mean-spirited ogre Mitt Romney is for wanting to take that away from so many people. Mitt Romney took off the gloves and sucker-punched a child. A child who doesn't know why he's suddenly a political football... all he knows, according to the skit is, "hey, people recognize me on the street!"

she's "shocked" that Romney would want to take PBS away from so many people who love it. Remember, the majority of PBS's funds in most places still come from the community donating. To stay on the air, we rely on a united community behind us to stay on the air; we can't play combative politics and alienate half our viewer support. We can't, as Big Bird said, "ruffle feathers." That's not our game. Our game is to remind everyone how they grew up on us, rely on us, and love us; that we are an important part of the whole community. And THAT is what makes Romney look so bad. Once again, you don't root for someone who hits an innocent child.

At this point our goal is to persuade undecided voters to support Obama. Folks who are still undecided at this point are people who aren't very interested in politics. Many of them are turned off by overly political statements. The genius of Big Bird and Sesame Street is that they are not overtly political, while carrying a very radical message - one of tolerance, love of learning, sharing, and kindness.

In 1969, the year after Martin Luther King & Robert Kennedy were assassinated, here comes this show set in an urban neighborhood with people of all different ethnic & financial backgrounds living together in harmony & learning from each other.

There were scary vampires who liked to count, googly-eyed monsters who liked cookies, overgrown yellow birds, green grouches living in trash cans, orange & yellow roommates that reminded you of the Odd Couple & Black people...LOTS of Black people!
And Hispanic people!
And Asian people!
And blue sentimental monsters named Grover who hugged those different people along with the White people.
He didn't do one armed hugs either. Full on hugs! There was no "EW" factor with him.

Black little kids, White little kids, Hispanic little kids, Asian little kids, kids of every background imaginable.
And you get to learn Spanish on this street called Sesame.
And you get to listen to Stevie Wonder & other hip musical acts on this street.
All while learning your ABCs & 123s.

Then the king of the Muppets the green frog Kermit who's known for singing a song called It's Not Easy Bein' Green comes on & teaches you further.
Teaching impressionable kids about how different doesn't mean wrong, that different doesn't mean bad.
Big yellow birds play with big brown snuffleupaguses.
Monsters are not really MONSTERS. They got feelings just like you & me. From worrywart Telly to happy-go-lucky Elmo.

I GUARANTEE that a lot of the social progress we have made as a country came DIRECTLY from this show.
Jim Henson was a long-haired hippie.
His Muppets were for Progress.
That's why it's no surprise that his children withdrew the Muppets from supporting Chick-Fil-A after the chicken chain's stance on Gay Marriage.
The Muppets are STILL for Progress.

I grew up watching the Muppet Babies cartoon as a kid & one of the most impressionable lessons I learned from that show was the thing about Baby Gonzo & the 'weirdo' label.
That episode showed that we're ALL 'weirdos' & just because we don't understand something or somebody doesn't make them wrong.

I mean a pig married a frog in one of those Muppet movies. Take on interracial romance perhaps?
The Muppets like Jim Henson are about Progress.

Rest In Peace Jim Henson & thank you.

Most of the kids wouldn't have known what the real issue was; they just saw two grown women getting into a fight about Big Bird and Elmo....

Funny how Big Bird struck such a chord. And the really funny thing is that Romney had obviously planned ahead to do his little riff on "I like Big Bird. I like you, Jim," or whatever the words were. It was very practiced and he looked so pleased with himself. What a dumb move, especially since he could have gone after something like Masterpiece Theater instead.

A lot of people don't know who Tweety is too and may have reacted on their own to the debate. And then those low info who did not watch the debate are hearing about Big Bird.

According to GOP we as a nation can't afford PBS, but we always have the cash to help "Java-the-Hate" (AKA Rush Limbaugh) spread his hate worldwide over the Armed Forces Network.

We simply do not matter. A friend and I were texting back and forth during the debate, and I really only focused on the outrage I felt at Sesame Street being fired. The rest of his words were lost to me as I couldn't stop focusing on his smirk. That one comment broke through my complete distaste for that man. I am beyond happy that he spoke his mind with regard to PBS, and things the average person finds important - like food and shelter for the many and not just for the few.

One wears a Mitt Romney mask and is otherwise dressed as Elmer Fudd in his hunting attire. The other dresses as Big Bird carrying a sign that says "HELP! MITT ROMNEY WANTS TO DO AWAY WITH ME!".

At every trick or treat stop, they push the door bell and when someone answers, Big Bird goes running in circles calling for help while Elmer Romney chases him yelling "Come back you wrascally Big Bird!"

I'd bet the two would clean up even in BIG RED country.

I find it strange too but I agree with you. I think most people see the defunding of PBS as an extreme measure. Big Bird is an american icon. Nearly everyone knows that character and knows Sesame Street. By Romney making any hint that he might detriment it, is seen as a bad thing. Romney comes off as a grinch. It was definitely an ill placed reference. He could've just mentioned Lehrer and stopped at that. But nope he had to go further and mention Sesame Street.

55. The HOUSE hangs in the balance
Sun Oct 7, 2012, 01:05 PM
Oct 2012

Some have noticed that Dems have a chance at taking back the House. That's looking less so due to deeper number crunching on the effects of GOP Gerrymandering... this is why we need everybody registered and voting! (And pushing back on calling liars "winners".) Otherwise, we'll end up in the same conundrum as the past two years. Since the Senate looks safe Dem, doing everything we can for the House matters big time. I for one want the gavel back in Nancy's hand.

From: http://election.princeton.edu/2012/10/06/predictions-october-6th-house/#more-6867
"I have evaluated incumbency and redistricting advantages quantitatively. I now believe that these two phenomena contribute approximately equally to an overall advantage of R+2.5+/-1.0%. In other words, Democrats need to win the popular vote by 2.5+/-1.0% in order to achieve near-parity in House seats. I was wrong about thinking there was little tilt in the playing field. It’s substantial.

Today’s prediction uses the generic Congressional ballot median since the conventions, currently D+2.5+/-1.0% (18 polls). Between now and the election, it is likely to move a few points in one direction or the other. Undecideds are at 10.5+/-0.8%. This month, a very large shoe will drop.

It is critical to pay attention to the uncertainty here: +/-11 seats.

House prediction, October 6th:
Two-party popular vote share: D 51.3 +/- 1.5 %, R 48.7 +/- 1.5%.
Seats*: D 217.5 +/- 11 seats, R 217.5 +/- 11 seats.
Uncertainties are 1-sigma (68% of outcomes).

Technical notes on this calculation are here. I would rather you not focus on the party-control probability, which is basically 50-50.

In the coming weeks, a better prediction will be possible two ways: (1) the freshest available generic polls, and (2) using district-specific polls, as collected by RealClearPolitics or Pollster.com."

was not in talking about PBS on the chopping block, something every ignorant right winger thinks is a great idea, but reminding them that what they watched and loved as kids was what was on the chopping block, not all the wonkish stuff in prime time that makes their brains hurt.

I am delighted the man is that tone deaf and clueless. If sinking Sesame Street is what kills off what's left of his disaster of a campaign, that's great.

I know no woman whose only hour of assured peace and quiet every day was during Sesame Street is going to vote for him now.

I bought my great nephew an Elmo costume ! I think incorporating any of the muppets into some type of message would work. I usually post something when it applies to my autistic son. He is now 22 and has always and still loves anything Sesame Street ! Just today I gave him The Muppet Movie to get through a boring day without much stimulation , VHS, which I picked up at a thrift store for .99. Honestly I can't imagine what our life would have been like without Muppets.

She also was appalled by Romney's 47% remarks, but the comment about Big Bird was the first thing out of her mouth. She couldn't believe he was so stupid as to go after PBS.

I also think there is a "straw that broke the camel's back" thing happening with some voters.
