You know, the thought of such a world... or, at least, of such an enlightened society, almost makes me want to cry. It could be that way, if we had but the faith and courage to make it so. It could be that way, if we weren't constantly engaged in ideological warfare. Your thoughts here... they demonstrate, perhaps, why the rapture could actually be a good thing, unfortunately though, I suspect that belief in the rapture is the result of delusional thinking and religious brain washing.

Ah, what a place it could be, if more of us simply valued the right things...

That's the window dressing.

The real fight is freedom vs. authoritarianism.

The RW is against freedom except for their "elites." People like GWB can do drugs, rape, steal, etc. and that's all ok. Everyone else is expected to toe the line, and they will be "protected" by these benevolent "Christian" leaders. Even better, they will have a completely predictable world- they'd really like to have that.

The Left is about increasing freedom and doing things responsibly. Since the RW doesn't think people can manage themselves without some sort of authority on top of them, we're the devils. Maybe we are? Legal drugs, Science, Abundant Resources, Peace...sounds like temptation to me!

These differences are both simple and complex, but the problem is...they don't mix. AT ALL. You can't make purple mixing the sides together.

I think that most right wingers simply do not have the same sort of experience with profound suffering, or with compassion. Perhaps that is wrongheaded... perhaps I assume too much. Still, I would rather believe them simply ignorant than willfully pushing the powers of what I can only find to be evil.

You may be right... it's just so damnably depressing to think that people could see things as conservative Christians do... not because of ignorance, but because of a true desire to keep a whip over the heads of the meek, the vulnerable and the many.

A lot of right wingers I know have profound suffering in their lives. Abuse in the home, alcohol, health problems...all sorts of things happen to them. The problem is, they live their lives in a state of perpetual fear. Mostly, they're afraid things will get worse, so they do everything they can think of to keep things the same.

Their leaders sooth them. They say that they'll do things that their god approves of, and they will be taken care of and properly policed. We do just the opposite- we say that it's safe to come out of their hole and we'll help them manage themselves.

The greatest and most profound evil is done out of fear and ignorance. Even greed doesn't match it, although it makes a good effort.

These people have to be dragged out of the dark into the light. They won't thank us, but they're not all bad people(although a fair number of them are) and they'll learn to accept the things they were scared of at one point.

And wouldn't they wage war with the U.S. That's the only part I see missing here.

I see them being lured to a set of uninhabited South Sea islands. They've been told, "God wants them there." Then the U.S. can blow up those islands and get rid of them all once and for all. It can be blamed on an earthquake and tsunami.

...of course, would need to mean that a major reversal in today's bipartisan trend would have to take place for this to happen. The corporate takeover of our public schools would have to be stopped and reversed somehow. The situation as it stands now has happened due to a great sleight of hand disguised as being "good for the students." It would be a major fight if enough politicians would commit themselves to stop the disastrous trend of corporate ownership.
