i can't see 17 republicans agreeing to convict, but *if* they agreed to that, i can't imagine why they wouldn't vote to bar him from future federal office; in fact, that might be the *only* reason they would agree to vote to convict in the first place -- to prevent future retaliation from a re-elected donnie.

But preventing him from ever becoming president again would be a key consideration for republicans to convict in the first place.

its a separate vote than removal and evidently its been used fro judges before to disqualify them in the future

Because conviction requires a two-thirds vote, this means that removal can occur only as a result of a two-thirds vote. Unlike removal, disqualification from office is a discretionary judgment, and there is no explicit constitutional linkage to the two-thirds vote on conviction. Although an argument can be made that disqualification should nonetheless require a two-thirds vote the Senate has determined that disqualification may be accomplished by a simple majority vote
