Oregon state representative fined, told to resign by House speaker after letting rioters into Capitol

A Republican state representative caught on video opening the doors of the Oregon Capitol to right-wing demonstrators was removed from his legislative committees, billed for the damages caused by the group and called on to resign by the top House lawmaker.

Rep. Mike Nearman, of Independence, endangered everyone inside the building when he allowed violent demonstrators inside, said House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland. Security video obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive shows Nearman opening two doors during a Dec. 21 special legislative session.

Kotek said she stripped Nearman of his two committee assignments and rescinded his commission appointments. He was supposed to sit on a joint information technology committee and a joint ways and means subcommittee when the legislature convenes for its 2021 session Tuesday. Instead, he now faces Kotek’s call to resign.

The House speaker also fined Nearman $2,000 for the property damage protesters caused.
