we have got past deeper divisions in this country before. but not by forgiving and forgetting

we got past the civil war.

with three constitutional amendments and a decade of reconstruction, during which the former confederate states were basically forced to be semi-decent.

and even that wasn't enough, because as soon as they could get rid of the enforcement, they did everything the could to be evil short of actually returning to institutionalized slavery.

we're not getting past this without major legal changes and major increase in enforcement of rights and safety for democrats, women, minorities, immigrants, etc.

and not for just a decade, either. it takes a generation, at a minimum. might as well just make it permanent.

A forgiven and forgotten racist will still be a racist.
A forgiven and forgotten misogynist will still be a misogynist.
A forgiven and forgotten insurgent will still be an insurgent.
A forgiven and forgotten cager of humans will still be a cager of humans.

When has such behavior ever changed through forgiving and forgetting?????
