The military called the Jan 6 attack sedition and insurrection. The 14th Amendment bars from serving in Congress people who engaged in insurrection.
Seems to me like a big step towards barring/expelling a number of sitting members and senators.

(15,949 posts)the terrorist in AL had Ted Cruz phone numbers in his possession. He knew he could call on Ted, Shaun (sp) Hannity and Mo Brooks.
He knew who to call if he needed help.
Were they going to tell him where to throw his napalm jars?

(9,481 posts)It worries me that the Joint Chiefs even feel the need to issue this statement. Are they trying to intimidate/dissuade the MAGATS who think the military is going to join them if they rise up? Or is there a conspiracy within the Trump Admin that they are warning Trump not to try it.
I am not enthusiastic about throwing out Republican legislators UNLESS it is proven that they were active conspirators (meaning, they had foreknowledge of the plan to storm the Capitol and did/said nothing, and/or they actively assisted the insurgents with breaking the law).

(1,336 posts)I think they ARE warning the MAGATS and I believe they have some proof of the conspiracy within the Trump WH.
Yes, it's terrific that they have made this joint statement, and I hope it's also a warning to anyone in the military that court martial and (perhaps) death by firing squad may well be the punishment for any military magats.

(382 posts)violence was coming, violence stoked by these and other liars meant to enrage Trumps useful idiots. But that is not the reason they should be expelled. They knowingly supported the big lie that Donald trump was cheated out of his second term, that the election should be overturned and Donald trump should be declared president by congress. This is sedition and more than enough reason to kick them out.

(302 posts)is why tRump had to rely on random malcontents to overthrow the government. Milley got taken to task by a number of current and ex-military elites on his misuse of the armed forces and he sternly recanted. Had this "dry run" been successful for tRump, we would all be singing a different tune today.

(3,056 posts)But words are cheap...recall those retired military that have already been identified & court martial them. I'm hoping the wheels are in motion to do just that.

(11,564 posts)What a tragic waste of funds, effort and potential if Josh Hawley, along with several others, were to be banished from Congress before any of them could land at least one good body shot on Democracy?
In another relevant case...those people got their money's worth over the years with Cruz, amirite?

(964 posts)"Section 3
No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability."

(14,275 posts)Are the 1/3 insurrectionists prohibited from casting a vote? If so, this is slam dunk expulsion. If not, they will circle the wagons and continue to make trouble.
