By Oliver Willis -January 13, 2021 3:22 PM
The Trump supporters rallying at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wanted to overturn the will of American voters, a majority of whom voted for Joe Biden to be the next president.
Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) on Wednesday defended the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, claiming they were "scared to death" of living in a country without Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
During the debate on the House floor over impeaching Donald Trump, Grothman accused Democrats of making "offensive" and "inflammatory" statements about the mob.
"They're scared to death we're going to go back to the days without Donald Trump," he said of the violent mob of Trump supporteers. "Of hundreds of thousands of people crossing this border every month. They're scared to death nobody's going to keep our manufacturing here. They're scared to death that nobody else will fight the cancel culture as we head towards an era when some things can't be said."
Grothman claimed the Trump supporters are also "scared to death" of the incoming Democratic majority, who he alleged are "teaming up" with Black Lives Matter, a group he falsely claims is "founded by Marxists and the dislike of family."

(16,875 posts)He's saying they're scared that brown people are immigrating here, black people might actually be treated with dignity, and white people won't be able to say racist/bigoted shit freely without pushback. That's what they're afraid of...smdh

(15,749 posts)I keep hearing the RWNJs talk about it, but really don't get it.
Is it the shunning of offensive products/ideologies/personalities? Or is it something else?

(29,322 posts)Cancel culture is a rhetorical device strategically use to gaslight people who make valid complaints about discrimination and oppression. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation meant to undermine the subjectivity of an other. The gaslighter's target doesn't have to feel crazythey just need everyone else watching to agree that their target's position is so completely without merit that it doesn't warrant a good faith argument. Gaslighting is about (1) manipulating the circumstances; (2) avoiding real, effective engagement with the argument; and (3) preserving the (unequal) status quo. Intent is irrevelant when labeling gaslighting; its about gaslighting as a strategy and its impact.
Being cancelled doesn't have an official definition; thats part of the problem. The vagueness gives the term more power, allowing more people to appropriate it for personal means. Addressing cries of cancel culture at face value is a losing game of whack-a-mole where a million different people with a million different visions of what cancel culture is keep popping upyou may hit a few on the head to make them disappear, but you never actually win the game.
Look at who believes in cancel culture: celebrities, abusers, people with wealth and large platformsand the people who sympathize with them. We live in an unjust, kyriarchal world where race, gender, geography, ethnicity, class, ethnicity, and other factors out of our control play a large part in discrimination and systemic oppression. It's no coincidence that people on top of the privilege pyramid are the ones who complain about cancel culture the most.

Fat chance he'll be voted out, though. Sheboygan county is rather red.

(2,574 posts)and most of us who are still alive are looking forward to the virus free life after Trump. No more Trump! What a beautiful thing! It's as refreshing as the end of WW II.
So sick of these corrupt, greedy, ignorant Republican fools, working hard every day to destroy our lives, our country, and all life on the planet.

(50,303 posts)because of Trump. Chances are some of the rioters will die from Covid given it was a super spreader event, not to mention the deaths from last week. People are now losing their jobs and losing their freedom because of their criminal acts in the name of Trump. I can't believe they all think it was worth it. A Vermont State Police officer just resigned over a Facebook post supporting the insurrection. His choice was resign or be fired. Good luck with that job hunt.

(65,160 posts)35, 45, or 55 year olds that lived all but 4 years of a middle class existence without the buffoon in the White House fear the life that got them through the first 30, 40, or 50 years.
That's plainly stupid.
And, if it's really "fear" there's a word for that. Phobia.
An unwarranted fear of things that pose no real threat is not an excuse.
