From my understanding the idea that a president could pardon himself

Has not been tested. It’s just a theory, right? If trump were to do so it seems clear it would end up in the Supreme Court. I’m certainly not happy with judges he installed but they’ve shown a willingness to defy him. And certainly the types of crimes he’s committed ought to ensure they are careful with the precedent they’d be issuing. After all we now have a Dem president. He might do much worse things than have an affair.

You're right - It hasn't been tested, but I don't think it would be upheld StarfishSaver Jan 2021 #1
Easy enough to test through SCOTUS Sneederbunk Jan 2021 #2
No one has ever tried to pardon themselves, not even Nixon. Marius25 Jan 2021 #3

even by Trump's judges.

The Constitution doesn't permit it, either in plain language nor in spirit or logic.

There is really no Constitutional or logical basis to allow a self-pardon. It would make a President a King, completely above the law which defies the foundation of our system of government.

The Supreme Court would have to invoke their inner fascism to allow it.

never even thought of pardoning himself.

If Trump tries a self pardon and gets away with it, a future president could go in with a plan for treason and other "high crimes" with a plan for a self pardon when people start to scream. Boy, a;;owing a self-pardon would be making a tyrant.
