President-elect Joe Biden is planning to bring back a top Pentagon official leading the fight against the Islamic State who was fired by the Trump administration late last year, according to two defense officials and a transition official.
Christopher Maier, who served as the Pentagon's Defeat ISIS Task Force director between March 2017 and November 2020, will return to the Defense Department after the inauguration as the acting civilian overseeing special operations forces, according to the three officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the subject.
Maier could not be reached for comment. A Pentagon spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
The Pentagon announced Nov. 30 that Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller had accepted Maier's resignation after the department disbanded his office, reflecting the success of the U.S.-led effort to defeat the terrorist group. His duties would be folded into two other offices overseeing special operations and regional policies being run by Trump political appointees, Ezra Cohen-Watnick and retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata, who once called former President Barack Obama a terrorist leader."
