Andrews Air Force Base is the airfield portion of Joint Base Andrews, which is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force. In 2009, Andrews Air Force Base merged with Naval Air Facility Washington to form Joint Base Andrews.

For example, Fort Lewis and McChord AFB are now Joint Base Lewis McChord. What is actually being consolidated is the base infrastructure such as housing, water and sewer, and the like, in an effort to eliminate redundancies and save money.

They'll always be separate, as far as I'm concerned.

I spent two years on Ft. Lewis as a kid when my Dad was stationed there. I attended Woodbrook Junior High with the other Army kids, and the Air Force kids. The Air Force was a different world

Don't know why. Sam Houston is on the other side of town from Lackland.

Fort Sam Houston was known as an Army post, but has long trained medics and corpsmen from other branches.

Republicans have a way of wiping out traditions for their own purposes.

Years ago a GOP congress changed the name of Washington National Airport to Reagan National Airport. In the old days, it was called "National". GOP now always call it "Reagan" or "Reagan National". Most locals still call it "National" or "DCA".

Similarly, in the Lesser Bush years, Rumsfeld blurred the line between the service branches. Andrews Air Force Base had always been that - an Air Force base. There was something . . . . I don't know . . . . "local" about that. He changed the name to the current Joint Base Andrews. To many, it has a far more military, almost menacing, feel to the name.

I suspect you are reacting to Brian Williams' comments just now on MSNBC. He was alluding to all of that.

Back in the 90s, DoD went all in on "joint" operations among the Army, Navy, Marines, USAF. Many of the miltary bases lost their specific service designation and became "Joint Bases" where members of all services were/could be stationed.

Base realignment/consolidation.

For example McGuire Air Force Base and Ft. Dix Army Base & Lakehurst Naval Air station in Jersey became "Joint Base McQuire-Dix-Lakehurst" (3 branches - Air Force-Army-Navy - working together).
