As part of the traditional ceremony in which members representing the House and Senate chambers present a variety of gifts to the incoming President, Vice-President and their spouses, House Majority leader Steny Hoyer unveiled a framed photograph of the inauguration that had occurred less than two hours before, and presented it to the Bidens.
As he started his presentation (about two seconds into the video, below), Hoyer formally addressed the First and Second couple.
Madame Vice President, Mr. Emhoff, Dr. Biden, Mr. President
President Biden interrupted him: Joe, he said, correcting his old friend Hoyer (you have to turn the volume up to hear this as he was speaking through a mask).
Hoyer responded, No, Joe. Youre Mr. President.

Yes, he is.

(36,533 posts)It reminds me of "The American President" when President Shepherd (Michael Douglas), says to his best friend & chief of staff (Martin Sheen) "When we're alone you can call me Andy." To which Martin Sheen responds, "Whatever you say Mr. President."

(22,054 posts)We watched "The American President" one night last week. It's a terrific film with a number of great lines. Michael J.Fox's character is terrific and Samantha Mathis as the president's secretary captured a D.C.-type of personality perfectly.
President Shepard's speech at the end of the film is a classic and when the film ended, my wife asked me, "Do you remember when we had a president who could speak like that? It was only 4 years ago!"
Thankfully, we have one again.

(21,812 posts)For years, we've had to watch those episodes and pretend we had a competent, compassionate POTUS.
Now, we don't have to pretend.

(22,054 posts)Since Trump is fundamentally ignorant, I thought if he would binge-watch "The West Wing," he would at least have a lesson in some of the civics he would need to know to be an effective president.
Of course, Trump always knows more about everything than everybody.

(8,685 posts)I miss that show and could not watch reruns for the past 4 years.. too painful as it reminded me how awful the Whitehouse had become. I think I can now watch them and enjoy once again.

(34,462 posts)Whenever that thing would enter the dining room, the manager would yell to the diners, "All rise!" a foreshadowing of the dictator wannabe he turned out to be. What an insufferable asshole.
What a disgusting piece of work.

(2,073 posts)This was an incredibly moving moment, which brought on fresh tears.
Symbolic not only in its solemnity but because seeing (what used to be) small gestures like this, of respect and dignity, are so healing. Also it was not lost on me to hear Rep. Hoyer's voice echoing in the rotunda of the Capitol which to me was like fresh air washing out the stink of insurrection.
Well done. And thank you for sharing!

(16,296 posts)was greeting/shaking hands with old vets and one in a wheel chair struggled up to shake his hand. Obama told him to remain seated, no reason to stand and the old, frail vet replied that Obama was his President and he would stand for him.
You dont have to do that, President Obama said as he saw Hackney standing.
No sir, Hackney replied, Youre the President.

(1,639 posts)And think about the story in the original post, I can imagine that many on the Right will insist that we didn't extend that same respect to Donald Trump during his tenure as President. Well, here's the real difference--Donald Trump is the one who didn't respect the Presidency.
There is an inherent humility and soberness that comes with being granted the power of leadership. It sounds like a contradiction, I know. But here, in this country, power is conferred upon our leaders by the consent of the governed. Power in a democracy is not something to be seized, it must be freely given with implicit trust towards the one receiving it.
The Capitol Rioters thought they could seize the power of governance and Trump is widely know for grasping (and grabbing) for what he wants. These sorts offer no respect to other people; they are therefore unable to inspire it anyone.

(11,572 posts)While I think "Mr. President" has to be the correct form of address, people that relaxed and comfortable with other people are a joy for those around them.
When I was in ICU in 2010, the doctor that saved my life by being a brilliant diagnostician was called "Peter" by everyone...and I mean EVERYONE. Patients, nurses, orderlies, janitors....everyone.
I have never been so comfortable with a doctor. My dentist is the same way, and I've been going to him for 18 years as a result.
