It might sound silly, but the one thing that broke me the most yesterday:

When I heard news that the plane that had been designated Air Force One and had flown Trump to Florida was en route and returning back to DC.

For some reason, it reaffirmed what the Presidency--and this country--stood for.

The thing was, Donald Trump always thought he was bigger than the Presidency itself. To him, it served one purpose only: to give him a claim to ultimate and never-ending power, glory and attention. However, the nitty gritties of the job that his predecessors and now successor have had to grapple with--the checks and the balances, the constitutional constraints, the unflattering burdens of the office--that was always beneath him.

He could have as well called himself Emperor, and no doubt would have if he could. And have at his disposal all those powerful glories at his hand for an indefinite amount of time, without regard to the popular will of the people or whatever concerned them.

Powerful glories that included a 747 jumbo jet at his beck and call, with the name of our country emblazoned on its side, and its fuel and maintenance paid for at our taxpayer expense.

I had actually seen Air Force One once before a year or two back, parked on the tarmac at the West Palm Beach airport. My kids were in the car with me, and under normal circumstances I would have happily pointed it out them as an exciting moment. But the thought of the man who used it and called himself the President disgusted me so much that I simply drove on by without comment.

He would have loved to have had that plane for life. And the bloody events at the Capitol two weeks prior were intended to make that come to pass.

But thank God, it failed.

And thank God, we live in a nation of law, with a President and not an Emperor.

So when I heard news that the plane that had carried Trump to his residence was returning back to the Nation's Capital, it really hit me deep.

Because no matter what Donald Trump thinks, no man or woman will ever be greater than the Presidency. The Presidency--and its office, and both its perks and solemn responsibilities--will always be greater than one person. And so that plane was leaving Donald Trump behind, alone and without further power, and returning to serve President Biden during his time in office.

On the morning of November 9, 2016, I truly and honestly thought we were going to lose our democracy and our country. I truly expected the man ascending to the office to seize the reigns of power for himself and end our republic as we knew it.

And in the four years that followed, we very nearly did lose it.

But somehow, by luck or Divine Providence, we did not. And knowing Donald Trump had been left behind as our country carried forward absolutely hit me on a heavy emotional level.

(The irony is that I live a mere half hour away from where he now sits and stews in oblivion, behind the gilded walls of Mar a Lago. And yet all the same, I haven't felt further away from him as I do now that he no longer has his grasp around our collective necks.)

The idea that we as a country have suffered a mass traumatic experience from the past four years might sound laughable. But it's absolutely true. And like individual victims of traumatic experiences, only now that the danger has passed are we going to start to emotionally absorb what we had just gone through, and process all the horrors.

And let us not mince words; they were truly horrors indeed.

And the idea that we survived, that the danger--at least the immediate danger--has passed, is both a relief but also an emotional bombshell that leaves us shaking. Think of Tom Hanks' portrayal of the title character in Captain Phillips; in the end, after his rescue he collapses into a quivering wreck even as a nurse assures him, "You're safe now."

But we survived.

And our plane, leaving the most disgraced person to ever hold the Office in its wake, has come back home to us.

We were force-fed a toxic stew of untruths, knowing that's what they were. Thank God we had each other to keep our inner compasses true. But it was exhausting and a constant shock to the system to hear the lies magnified all around us.

It’s even more poignant than the swearing in.

When Obama flew over to leave, I reminded myself not to be sad because he’d exhausted his time and Republicans had exhausted him.

When Bush flew over the city and left I was ecstatic to see him depart.

...and close to what I felt about The Beast. I hated thinking of that asshole riding in "our" limo. Though The Beast has mutated and been replaced, it's still OUR CAR and a damned sexy one. I hope I live to see the day when its successor is electric.

Well...it's over...it's really over. It has a new license plate: "46"

UPDATE, 1/20/2021: The presidential Cadillac limousine known as "The Beast" changed hands as of noon today, when Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president. The story below describes the heavily armored limousine at the time of its first use with outgoing President Trump, in 2018. Today, after the inauguration and related events at the Capitol, the new president climbed into the Beast—wearing the number 46 on its license plate for today only—to head to Arlington National Cemetery for a ceremonial wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On a lighter note, check out the thickness of that door:

And on a more local note - his neighbors will no longer have to listen to helicopters take off. As of noon yesterday, that is no longer allowed. I wonder if Dolt managed to get from the airport to his club before that went into effect? Actually I don't care.

The President's every word is listened to, and poured over. Trump reveled in everyone having to jump to action at his every whim. Knowing what Trump's personality is, he reveled in nothing more than having the power to send everyone in his midst scrambling with the utter of a phrase. He loved to see the consequences of his tantrums. He loved being the guy everyone had to take seriously no matter what he said.

While I have no doubt his businesses provide some of that gratification for him, they will never approach the power he felt as President, the ability to ruin anyone's morning, day, or life with a sentence was the ultimate for him. He woke up today, for the first time in 4 years, and there wasn't a staff of hundreds responding to his beckon call. There wasn't an endless string of people for him to order around and otherwise torment. It was probably just a couple of servants at the house, what does he want for breakfast, is he going golfing today, normal stuff.

I guarantee that today has been on of the hardest days of his life. Good.

The plane is more than a plane. It symbolizes something about this country. Just the sight of it gives me goosebumps and makes me proud.

I read that President Kennedy designed the markings to capture the strength and majesty of the United States and he wanted people to know when they saw the plane land and taxi, that the leader of the free world had arrived - and it does just that. And, as you said, the idea of that plane coming back to Washington, DC yesterday is a powerful and comforting thought.

Thank you for expressing this so eloquently!

Former presidents have a different protective detail than current presidents. Presidents are guarded by agents from the Presidential Protection Detail. Former presidents are guarded by a different - and much smaller - group of agents.

At noon, Trump's PPD agents signed off and handed him over to the agents of the Former Presidents Detail. And, if past practice is any guide, they likely boarded the former AF1 to "deadhead" back to DC with other staff (including the milaide and WH physician) and crew no longer assigned to Trump.

So, you may have gotten your wish, after all.

Man I'd love to be a fly on the wall, maybe Pences fly. To watch poor widdle Twumpie deal with the new lack of subservience to him. No Air Force One. No more everything paid for.

I think he would not have dealt well with post Presidency even if he'd served 8 years. Not that I'd want that. But he seems like a person who, once they've reached a certain level of prestige, just do not deal well with a reduction in that prestige. And for Donald it also includes the populism and nurturing his celebrity status. Where every day the news was about HIM.

Perhaps he'll try and continue on, pretending he's the great leader that was denied a second term by fraudulent means by Democrats. And campaign for 2024 But I suspect he will finally realize, with all the court cases, and the bad press, he can't do it again, even if the Senate fails to convict him and deny him running again that way.

We will have to keep fighting the good fight and make sure folks know we can't let up for the 2022 Midterms like we did with Obama. I so tired of 2 steps forward and 2 steps back. Valuing the democracy and this country as much as I do was a revelation to me. Dropping him in FL and heading back to DC and The Real President was a fitting enough denouement to that facet of recent history, but dropping him off in the middle of the Gulf would have been better.

"You can do i! Just keep thinking 'One dry foot!'"

"ohhhh. He couldn't do it."

Silly revenge fantasies aside, AF1, its massive maintenance and fuel costs, but most of all, it's use as a toy, an entitlement at the whim of awful people that didn't deserve to sit in one of the seats, let alone use it at and for their convenience? Really, really rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm also pretty disgusted with the SS protection I heard the family is getting.

and never forgive the GOP that nominated him. They knew he was a snake but were consumed by the populism and so was our news media.

I'm confident President Biden and VP Harris will return the proper perspective of those offices to their traditional values and meaning, along with a healthy dose of humility.

However, it's going to take a while for America to divorce itself from wanting their president to be an entertainer and carnival barker. The same goes for all our media resources that profited from his constant lies, bullshit and malfeasance.
